My son got a CLI request denial from NFCU after pulling EQ, the reason given:

  • You've reached Navy Federal's maximum unsecured credit limit.

He has a Visa at $20K, for which he requested the CLI, and a NavChek overdraft LOC account at $3K.  He is also an AU on my card at $80K.

Does NFCU include AU accounts when deciding the maximum unsecured credit limit?  If so, do I just need to remove him as AU and have him ask for reconsideration?  If approved, if he is subsequently re-added as AU, will they take adverse action?  Has anyone else seen this in action before?  If so, what was your experience?

I also applied for the 91-day CLI for DW's NFCU Platinum Visa. She was denied for the same reason. Her CL on the card is $10,000. She also has NavChek of $15,000.

I found this to be an odd reason, since I have the cashRewards Visa with a $25,000 limit and the More Rewards Amex with a $27,500 limit. She is an AU on the More Rewards Amex.

So my personal exposure with NFCU is $52,500. Her personal exposure with NFCU is $25,000. Yet, she's got their maximum unsecured credit line? Doesn't make sense to me, unless they are counting my accounts against her as far as credit limits are concerned.

Navy does not count AU cards against their maximum exposure limits.  Maximum exposure remains at $80k across all personal credit cards.  NavChek does not count at all.

What Navy means is that "You've reached Navy Federal's maximum unsecured credit limit ... for YOU."  Removing him as an AU on your account will not change that.

Just because they have a maximum exposure doesn't mean everybody gets that big of a piece of cake.  It all depends on factors such as income, experience with Navy Federal and your credit profile.
