"Official" abbreviations for banks?

Recommended Posts

I have deposit accounts at more than one bank, and on one of my spreadsheets I have a two-letter field to denote which account the transaction affected ("BC" Bank of America (checking), "C3" CapitalOne 360,  "MO" for BMO Harris, etc.) and I am wondering if the Fed or ISO or some other authority has official abbreviations for these institutions, like the ICAO and IATA have for airlines.

Obviously the ABA routing numbers are official but they're unwieldy and uninformative in an everyday spreadsheet, plus the bigger banks use more than one.  My BofA account, opened in Minnesota, has a routing number that clearly goes through the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and not Minneapolis 😕

ABA numbers can be deceiving. If a bank was acquired sometime in its past, the ABA number of the legacy bank can remain indefinitely. I don't think there is any list like you describe.

Could you not use the stock market ticker index for the particular items you are tracking?

Coupla things; mainly I want the abbreviation to be a digraph yes DIGRAPH, and ticker symbols don't all have the same number o' letters.  See, Bank of America's symbol is BAC, whilst Citibank's is C (see).

Secondly I might one day have a deposit account with in institution that is not publicly traded.

No, I believe the Sidewinder-proprietary abbreviations shall have to stand, are groundbreaking,  and thus will earn me a distinguished place in orthographic history.
