When to Opt Out of the Target-Date Funds in Your 401(k)

Recommended Posts

The problem with target funds is the target is calculated differently depending on the investment manager. Fidelity's Target 2020 fund has a large stock position. You might be surprised how much it has gone down with the stock market recently, considering the target date is very close. On the other hand the U.S. Government employees TSP plan Target 2020 fund has little in stocks, and will go to nearly nothing in stocks once 2020 is reached.

Conclusion: Do your research.
