I can only echo (i.e. copy and paste) what others have said on other message boards I follow.

"Senator McCain was a strident and firm and thoughtful Republican...He was known as a maverick and beloved by his constituents and state for good reason. He was a good man. "

"Say what you want about his politics but he always fought for and was in love with his country, can't say the same about many nowadays."

"John McCain might have been the "Maverick" in the Senate, but he had the calm thought to be able to cross the aisle when it was in the country's interest. All we can do is recognize all the years of his service to this country and be honored that ours is the country he served. He is the caliber of man that Makes America Great and there are too few like him."

Shot down on 26 OCT 67.

Broken leg, one arm fractured in 3 places, other arm fractured. Shoulder smashed with a rifle butt and also bayoneted in the foot.

Released from captivity 15 MAR 73.

I've been involved in crap most can't imagine yet I myself can't even begin to fathom what he went through.

Everyone can have opinions on his politics and his involvement with the S&L fiasco, but one indisputable fact is he was one tough mother fukker.

Godspeed CAPT McCain

I didn't know until this week that he was offered the option to leave captivity because his dad was a high ranked naval officer, but he declined.

He refused to leave his fellow servicemen behind.  McCain was a class act.

This based on a 2008 article written by historian Mary Hershberger, about McCain leaving the USS Forrestal while it burned:

“When New York Times reporter Apple finished gathering his notes on the fire, McCain boarded a helicopter with him and flew to Saigon. Given that fires still burned on the ship and some of his fellow airmen were gravely wounded and dying, McCain’s assertion that he left the carrier for 'some welcome R&R' in Saigon has a surreal air. Apple, now dead, said nothing in his news reports about inviting McCain to leave the ship, although he did report talking to him in Saigon later that day. McCain does not mention receiving permission to leave the still-burning ship. Merv Rowland, a commander and chief engineering officer of the Forrestal at the time of the fire, told me that he had not known that McCain left the ship within 30 hours of the fire and that he found this 'extraordinary.' Rowland added that only the severely wounded were allowed to leave the ship and that no one, as far as he knew, would have been given permission to fly to Saigon for R&R.”

Plus,

Cliff Schecter's book "The Real McCain":

In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, “You’re getting a little thin up there.” McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you pirate.”

And I'll just leave this here.

I'm confused. A post praising a politician isn't political, but one pointing out his actual record in office is?

So if 10 people write "McCain was a true hero and real man, etc., etc.," that is not political?

But if 1 person writes, "Well, actually he was a war monger and he voted against making Martin Luther King Day a federal holiday" that is political?

Thanks for the clarification.

It's generally a decent, human thing to do to recognize a person's positive attributes and contributions when they pass.

With some obvious exceptions like Jeffrey Dahmer and Adolf Hitler, it's considered offernsive to pee onto a man's grave before he's even buried in it.

This.

Also, FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT AT THE TOP OF EVERY PAGE, BULLET 2 SPECIFICALLY:

Quote

We're done with the posts turning political, guys.

  • Starting immediately, any post that turns political will be immediately closed and the poster who interjected politics will be warned.
  • It is our interpretation that deems it political. We will not entertain discussion about your intentions.

So if you want to keep pushing, during at time when everyone who manages this site is clearly on edge and not in the mood, please feel free but realize it won't end well for you.  We're dealing with enough stuff, that it's easier to just ban people.  And then you won't get the help that you came for, and eventually we'd feel bad.  So, do everyone involved a favor and just let it go.

I completely agree.

(I'm guessing that barkerist was responding to the original post, which did seem political... IMO.)

McCain killed many more innocent people than Jeffrey Dahmer. Guess he wasn't very "humane". Guess that's not "offensive" either, since it was done in uniform.

Marv gave you a warning, which you didn't heed.  Pam asks you to let it go, and your response was to wait two weeks and drudge it back up.  Are you purposely trying to pi$$ someone off here?
