on aug 22 the online paypal account shows my payment paying off the card. august 23 it still showed i had a mere 30 bucks on my credit limit but that was enough for me to fill my car and get the points so i paid it no mind. but here aug 24 i went to fill my car and it now says i have a negative available to spend amount.

soooo...whats up with that?

My guess is that they did not post the payment to your account yet. While the payment is there, they didn’t update your balance before your first transaction.

A payment posting doesn't always automatically release the available credit.  This can be because an earlier payment recently bounced, to name just one potential reason.

Beyond what CV has posted, it is not uncommon for many pay-at-the-pump stations to place a hold of $100-$150 on an account even if the purchase is only $30.  Time for OP to explore other options...they clearly need more cards in a portfolio.

paypal does not put any holds on your CC account at all for gas. matter of fact they are very generous with letting over the limits go through. which is surprising. in the past they always increased the available credit after receiving a payment but for some reason this time its changed. i regularly paid them 2 to 3 times a week before and never had this issue.

I have no idea what their practices might be, hence the suggestion.  I never worry about holds since there is always more than sufficient credit and options to where a hold every few days is not a problem.  I just know the pumps always have the notice warning people about holds...

Multiple payments in a cycle, especially when it is multiples per week CAN be a red flag with some issuers.  To some lenders, it is on par with the old check-kiting schemes.  That could ALSO be at play.

In light of the above, gotta second the suggestion from konrad to call and inquire.  And in the interim, also explore other options since one is always at risk if they are that close to being tapped out limit-wise...there simply is ZERO margin for emergency or other unexpected expense.

funny gas pump story. in canada as with everywhere you gotta fill up the rental before you return it. of course things are in liters. ..oops. litres.

so since i know i'm filling up the car i hit the preauth for some crazy amount (there are about 8  choices on the pump) like 150 or so, thinking no big deal.ill probably use about 20 bucks.. WRONG...killed the one card with a huge preauth hold.  also car rental places take large holds up there too.

next port of call when i filled up i picked the 20 dollar option on the pump. lesson learned. thankfully i always take at least 3 cards on my cruises so wasnt a catastrophe.

i talked to 2 drones. my definition being that they repeat the same thing. its in our terms and conditions we can hold payments for 3 weeks. we cannot release your payment. i told her its a shame you cannot email, call or otherwise notifiy someone of this and that they just find out when they go to use their card it'd denied. she made up a story about her own card doing this to her. totally crazy. she said aug 30 it would be released. heck one time i deposted a 5 digit check and my CU send me notification it would be on hold, now thats good service. not just letting people wonder why they cannot charge anything.

she didnt have an answer why they never froze any of the other 2 to 3 payments a week i made since at least march. so thats at least 50 payments in the year and not a peep..yet this one they peep. she told me corporate never told her why they put the freeze on peoples accounts even when she asked. she said write to corporate. i'm sure they would say its' in our terms and conditions lol. they give me decent gas points and thats all i use it for usually so ill keep it but now ill be paranoid about paying them lol

she also said my bank has the right to take back the payment up to 21 days. why would a bank take back the payment. thats weird. the money is subtracted from my account, electronically sent to PP so how in the world would my bank have a right to take back a payment.

If $150 one way or another is killing a credit card, you have bigger issues.

Many low limit/sub prime cards hold payments for a few days before releasing the credit. Most prime issuers release the credit immediately even before they actually get the money.

The focus should be on getting quality cards with usable limits, rather than complaining about your toy sub prime card behavior.

but the cards are pretty much paid off now so my score should shoot up but i dont think you can overcome the blacklist.

oh and you wanna hear about a bad hold...lend up/arrow is insane with their holds. that was just a temp card i needed for a while. paid off. now for emergency or specific purpose like holds on hotel bills etc

There are plenty of decent cards out there that are NOT issued by the four major banks you listed.

Rewards may leave something to be desired on some of them, but there are options out there...they just need to be explored.

just paid it off and wow my super sub prime arrow/lendup card (has anyone even heard of it?) is better than paypal in customer service. who would have thunk?

Your card’s available credit may not change for up to five (5) business days after your payment posts (a precautionary measure to help you avoid going over your credit limit if the payment is returned for some reason).
