how long do brake pads last?

I took my 2012 Chrysler Town and Country in to the shop today to have my brake pads changed. I have a bit over 120K miles on it.

I told him to change both front and rear figuring with that many miles it would be needed.

 

He and the mechanic come out a bit later and asked what my brakes were doing. I told them that my daughter said they were "squealing" (with my hearing, I can not hear them). He says that my brakes and pads are all still in really good condition, that I don't need to change out the pads. He said they would try to clean them and that should help with the squeal.

 

The question is....how long should brake pads last? I thought I read something like 70K miles or so. (so I figured I was way overdue)

I can't change a door knob and I know that it depends on how you drive. :P

well, I get that much. (and he did say it was because I I treated them well) And I do admit that I start initial braking further back than some people that I know. Some will wait till they are coming right up on something before they start to brake.

I've had brakes fail me twice before (not on this vehicle, obviously) so I am all about taking my foot off the accelerator and slowly starting to brake when I see I am going to have to stop for a light. (or race the yellow :blush2: ....I've been known to do that a time or...10,000.)

But I have also had to slam on my brakes before as well when necessary.

 

Still though....from everything I have read, it seems that pads will last anywhere from 30-70K miles with the 70K for those who do a lot of highway (Interstate type) driving or little old ladies that drive all the time at a dizzying speed of 28 miles per hour. (neither description fits me - if my last speeding ticket is anything to go by)

I have 116k on mine at the moment. They are worn about halfway. Brake wear is a direct function of driving habits and road conditions, and therefore a mileage estimate is not apt to be accurate. Lots of interstate driving, protecting an ample following distance to prevent emergency stops and constant speed fluctuations, and general attention to surroundings will all have direct affects on wear.

Answer is that it all depends...after all, if I go out and run a few laps at Circuit of the Americas in the F-Type, I may well be changing pads more than once in that afternoon. Conversely, if I am driving any of them on longer highway drives, then I have been known to get more than 200K miles out of a set (Mustang 5.0 with a manual transmission).

 

City driving is going to kill them faster than highway driving for the obvious reasons. I am getting close to having to change out the OEM pads on the XK8 and it is a touch over 180K miles. The X-Type got new ones at 100K because someone had improperly adjusted the parking brake prior to my purchase of that one and since we were doing other work on the rear brakes, it made sense to put new pads on.

I'm at $31k miles and our brakes were just fine. I made a post in the Automotive Forum a couple weeks ago that we have to replace all our brakes, because all our rotors are rusted out. It's maddening having to replace decent brakes, but we had no choice. We got the front brakes done already and we're getting the back brakes next week.
