Hey guys,

First off Id like to thank this board as in just a few years Ive went from 600 credit score with tons of bads and one $500 Amex card to 800 + score and a dozen 15-30k cards. So those that are starting stick with it.. Couldnt have done it without the info here. At least this quick.

So my question.

Im looking for non top 10 banks or CU (that are joinable for gen public) that have starting limits in excess of 10k (or soft pull clis) and if possible frequent balance transfer checks and offers provided to existing members. Im really looking for the banks you dont see on like those affiliate sites that list the same major credit card offers. So no chase capitalone BofA etc...

Id rather not turn the topic to who needs large limits or arguing etc. so if we could stick to the subject we all could gain. I basically decided to no longer keep cards under 10k so that the amount of the limit you can really use is actually useful without going over 30%.

I will start. Alliant, penfed and KeyBank all gave a great Starting lines over 10k

Thanks again guys.

"Over $10k" is a pretty low bar, even for some credit unions. If OP needs to do frequent BTs that's probably the most helpful area of discussion.

OP, don't avoid a useful card because it may take an inquiry to get a CLI. The very purpose of an inquiry is to acquire more credit. It's literally why they exist.

I agree. I give my banks one shot though to correct a low credit line. If it results in a second hard pull for a cli and still brings me to under 10k I dont have time for them and there wont be a third. I do like my 0 percent balance transfers :) Edited by thinknot

With FICOs in the 800s I don't know where besides a local CU you would find initial limits under $10k... unless you are my mother and have perfect credit, strong income, expansive assets, and apply for a Discovery. Then you get a $3,700 limit and an FOAD in response to your CLI request.

Just my thoughts on the original post: Non-top 10 banks...are not as likely to deliver "top 10 credit limits", because they generally can't afford the risks the way the mega banks can. But - that is just my thoughts.
Clearly, with NFCU, PenFed, etc - credit unions often give larger credit limits than most banks, as they are providing service to an investor/shareholder in the credit union. That doesn't mean that they provide all the convenience of frequently available bank transfers.

NFCU - I've only been with them a short time, but they have a fantastic BT offer with no transfer fee and no interest - but as far as Iknow - at least with my credit profile, this is only offered once a year.

And in that last sentence is a key phrase - "with my credit profile".

PNC is where I bank. PNC is my oldest card. It used to be my lowest limit until I came out of the garden in April. They finally raised it to 10k, the same day I applied for and was approved for the PNC Cash Builder card - also 10k. These limits were granted with a 750+ score, and a thicker profile than when I first applied for the PNC points card with a 730 score.

Yet, my income is low (partially because I live in the Gulf Coast - everyone makes about 20% less here than they would in CA, NY, etc.) so I don't expect to match the limits of the higher income earners that can spend 5k in a month on a card and PIF.

In general, I don't think non-top 10 banks/CU's give limits of 10k or more to everyone with a FICO 8 score of 750+. I think there's too many variables in play.
Beyond NFCU, BOA, (maybe Chase? I've never lasted long enough with them to assess fairly) I can't think of any banks or CU's that will give 10k+ from the start - and aside from BOA, I can't think of any that routinely offer Balance Transfers.

My Citi Simplicity card is mostly useless - but they offer an outrageous BT of 3% fee, no interest for 12-15 months all the time. But the limit is too small to transfer any meaningful amounts. With my Costco and Double Cash cards having 6900 and 5800, respectively - and Citi turning me down on CLI's this past April, they don't seem too liberal for my profile. Folks who make the big bucks (with big expenses) seem to fare better.

BOA seems to be the only one that started me out with a decent limit, (6k) and have let it grow over time (less than 3 years) to just under triple that. And if I didn't have the BOA travel Visa, I could probably have boosted it to 25k. (the two cards equal to 25k limit)

This is purely anecdotal, of course. So many different income levels with different spending habits, different geography - I just don't think this can be a valid list.

You’d be surprised. I tried Walmart because I see people with high limits. and they offered me $500...lol

So you call the UW and ask for 35k.

I did. But no go. Said my account is not eligible for for a cli.. At least I assume it was UW. As I used that backdoor number. But my Indian is rough... I explained everything but it was a circle. Called three times. Said f orget it

Navy is generous with limits and usually offers 0%/0% BT at least once a year. Barclays and Discover will sometimes offer low interest promos (sometimes only purchase) if you call them. Citi does the same if I don't use my card for a while. I just accepted 0% on purchases until January on my least used Citi card.

For other ideas, check out this thread: https://creditboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=532409&view=&hl=&fromsearch=1

Use the CP database to get an idea of what you can expect for starting limits.

Credit limits are determined by income, debt, FICO scores, temperature, direction of the wind etc. There's no way to list which non-major banks guarantee $10K starting limits.

Case in point, the OP can't get over $500 on a Walmart card from the Sync Sr UW's. Standard thinking is $10K on a store card or $30K on the MasterCard is available to anyone that isn't a deadbeat.

It would really take looking at the overall picture to get an idea. If you have a lot of 'toy cards' that's in line with expection to get more toy cards. Walmart card as the 800 number for SP CLIs, which mine is capped (@Sync exposure 35k unless that's changed) between my Sam's Club/WM, Amazon, and CareCredit.
