It's been a few years since this conversation, but a credit analyst told me that they would go "substantially higher" with my credit card limits if I was willing to document assets that weren't at BoA/ML.  He wasn't willing to elaborate much beyond the teaser statement, and it wasn't a priority to pursue at the time, so I just left it there.

 

This was a member of the "Preferred Credit Team," which was (is?) a different group of employees who service their Preferred Rewards customers.

 

It's entirely possible that you'd get the same answer from any analyst regardless of your relationship status. 

 

If "your friend" has the opportunity to inquire, it would be great if s/he could post the outcome.
