Discover Insulting CL

Recommended Posts

I applied for Discover IT just now and was given a $3,900 CL. They've been sending me pre approvals every month. All scores are above 770. Stated Income, $97,000. I asked for application review and was given the usual BS that "here at Discover we do thing a little differently, we can't increase credit line at this time. We need at least 3 months of usage." I told them that the CL is unacceptable for my current profile and that I am withdrawing the application. So App withdrawn. Don't care for the inquiry.

On the one hand, I firmly believe it's true - higher limits beget higher limits - so I understand your irritation with Discover.

On the other hand, with your income, and given Discover's reputation for soft pulls and frequent increases, seems a bit premature to close it. That said, I'm puzzled as to why Discover only gave me a 3k Miles card, and even PNC gave me a 10k card to go along with a 9k increase on my first PNC points card to match the other one at 10k. It all comes down to the underwriters, their policies and what's in your reports.

I am puzzled too. I don't know which report they pulled. It might be that they pulled EQ which has 6 stupid inquiries, mainly from Navy and Penfed.

NASA's just now approved me for $17,600 with only $42,000 stated income plus $20,000 additional income. I am now looking to build $30,000+ CLs.

I have no patience for subprime CLs. My profile deserves better than a useless $3.9K.

Discover is one of the most frustrating lenders when it comes to CL management (Cap 1 ranks a notch higher on the frustration meter). However, from time to time, Discover has had some excellent promotions that has made holding the card worth the frustration. (Remember the challenge that yielded 5% cb on all purchases for 6 mo?)

With patience, Discover CL can come up to snuff. And as far as reason to hold a Discover card, the 1st year cb match is a good one (particularly with Discover It Miles -- which yields 3% cb on all purchases in the first year, redeemed through an offset of charged travel purchases).

Then again, I grasp that nod all people have an interest in "coddling" their cards/issuers. For them, Discover is one to resist.

I must be the exception to the rule when it comes to Disco. Hege has had issues and a far better profile getting over 36K with them. I opened mine at $4500 when everyone else was 15K+ with scores and income in the same realm. I took it on as a project to tinker with and within 18 months bumped it up to 50K with minimal use each month.

Disco isn't for everyone but, if you have some patience it can be worthwhile in the long run even with the benefits axed recently it's nice to know it's there to use if you need it for a backup. They have some decent offers for BT's and deals online that add up especially during the first year when your spend rewards get doubled.

There's no room to be insulted in credit. It's just business.

Anyway, there's a dozen or two threads out there that could have prepared you for exactly what you experienced.

Nobody needs Disco. But if you want them for whatever reason, you sign up for the long haul. They're almost never going to start you with what you want. It will take you a couple of years to build a decent CL. But it will build. Everyone who has stuck with them has ended up with 50-100k CLs over time.

While I agree with most of this...100k CLs??? Getting to 50k was like pulling teeth (but completely achievable).

Personally, I wouldn't have withdrawn the app or closed the card based on the starting limit alone. The CLIs seem to have slowed down as of late, but they are still relatively easy to compound in short order.

Was this your first account with Discover or have you had them in the past? If you have a history with them that could also be a factor in their decision no matter what is on your CR today.

I applied for Discover in 2016 with higher scores, income, and existing limits.... $4500. Lower than my lowest reported limit. It is frustrating but it's at $19K now with nothing more than a few clicks every few months even with minimal usage. They do things differently, just like they told you.

Pretty much sums it up right there.

First I will preface everything with Discover Sucks.

But, for the first year Disco doubles your cash back. 10% on their rotating categories makes it somewhat worthwhile. This quarter (Q2) is groceries. I'll take 10% cash back on $1500 in groceries over 3000 MR's all day long. Next quarter (Q3) is restaurants. I'll take 10% cash back on $1500 in restaurant spend over 3000 MR's all day long. After that (Q4) it is Amazon/Warehouse Clubs. I'll take 10% cash back on Amazon/Warehouse clubs over 3000 MR's all day long.

I took my Disco account from $1500 to $50K in 3 years with all soft pulls.

(All the above cash back to MR comparisons are based on cards contained in the OP's signature)

Anyone knows is wen discover does a SP for a CLI is it from equifax? Or tu

Also wen a bank does a SP general taking do they see the actual details of the credit report like if there is a bk or judgment or in a sp it's just a score ?

Yuda, I just answered since exact same question for you in another existing thread a few days ago.

The reason why I am asking is because wen I was approved with them for the 10k they pulled equifax and equifax does not report my bk This how I managed to get some other good cards with high limits

What will heppen wen they will sp me for a CLI on the tu and see the bk am i ina risk they will close my card or decrease my limit ?

What heppnes if I freeze the tu will they pull equifax?

WHY DO YOU INSIST ON CONTINUING TO MISREPRESENT YOUR SITUATION? YOU NEED TO STOP.

I brought it to your attention in your NFCU thread when you failed to disclose you did not have a BK reporting on your EQ report. I politely stated you are being misleading and that you need to stop doing this.

Even so, you continue to do this many times on this board and others.

On top of it all, you have the audacity to make this statement?

How about this, go tell Discover and NFCU the TRUTH about your BANKRUPTCY. Make sure to come back and tell us the truth on how much they really love you.

See this is wild to me because just last week they approved me for $6,500 with an EXP of 676 and much, much less income than you and I'm self-employed. I have a feeling they approved me for that much so I would transfer some balances over to them, which is actually exactly what I'm about to do. However, my outstanding credit on my other 2 CCs is only about $3,500 so I have no idea why they thought I would need a $6,500 limit.

Just about 2 years ago Discover rejected me for a secured card. Since then I have grown 2 other cards and last month I had a bunch of junk fall off my credit reports due to age.

discover's favorite demographic are people with scores below average but not too low. 676 is a sweet spot.

given the crappy rewards, it really isn't a good mainline card.

I guess I'm their target consumer then. I am not concerned so much with the rewards as with continuing to rebuild. Up until this point my only cards are a NFCU nRewards Visa and a Cap One Quicksilver MC. So my only hope for now is that a third tradeline will help my score go up more. Maybe at some point I'll get wild and throw a little installment loan into the mix to see if I can make those scores go up even more!

As you can see I like to live dangerously.

Their main target market is in the "improving" credit category, and they like situations where they think they can be a major player in your portfolio.

It's the opposite of helpful to leave out all relevant information.
