No, an allowance does not teach your children how to manage money

Recommended Posts

I never noticed anyone paying bills (on time or otherwise) when I was four years old.

Never gave my kid an allowance EVER.. he is 27 now, and manages money just fine.

He got money on his birthday and holidays once he became a young teen. He could then decide how that was to be spent.. or saved. And wouldn't you know, he saved most of it, FOR YEARS!

One day when the battery gave out in his car, he wound up walking to work (1.5 miles) .. because as he told me.. lots of people "call in" when that happens, but he needed to work so he could pay for the new battery....

he is actually better with his money, than I was when I was his age.

Give two kids the same allowance, and often one of them will eff it up and the other won't.

It's not the allowance.

Some kids just become adults who will just never get it together no matter what.
