Call me a glutton for abuse, but since I had such a nice time out of the garden a couple weeks ago, I thought I'd make one last app...to Chase.

If your memory serves you correctly, less than a couple years ago, Chase shut down my account for "reputable risk".

So, I thought - perhaps foolishly - that Amazon might have something to say about whether or not I deserve their card. Since I don't like "store" cards, and don't want to deal with Synch, I figured why not?

Approved for a measly 5k. I'll take it. I'm curious to see how long it stays open with wise usage and payments in full.

Oh, it's way over 5 new accounts in the past 2 years. This makes 7, I think.

Oh, free $70 gift card, too!

congrats. I've been reading all these things about Chase but the only cards I've seen mentioned are their own, not the co-branded ones, so I've been curious if these 'pro-active' moves by Chase affects them as well. my only Chase right now is a Disney Visa. It's been less than a month and am I'm already constantly freaking out about it. t's probably my best card at the moment too.

Take deep breaths and sip some chamomile.

Chase Amazon Visa is not under 5/24.

Hope Chase leaves you alone in peace.

  • 4 weeks later...

And....as I checked online to see my balance..."this account is closed".

No letter, no call, no nothing. Ah well. My huge balance of 3.32 can sit there until the last day to pay. Too bad. Didn't even make it a full month. But at least I got a free $70 sign up from them.

Do they close people's credit cards like this a lot? I was thinking of applying for a Freedom or Freedom Unlimited after my last few baddies fall off my reports. I want to get a loan on a Mazda in 1.5 - 2 years and Chase is their captive lender for 0%, so I was thinking to start a relationship with Chase now. If it's a bad idea I might just get a Citi Double Cash instead.

Well that's unfortunate. Maybe I won't bother getting a credit card from them then. I am trying to have only cards that I can grow and build a relationship with. Sounds like that won't be Chase.

If your scores allows it and if you're under 5/24 you should definitely go for Chase CC. Chase has some very good cards and if you'll be good to them they more likely than not will be good to you. When you stay away from MS especially for the sign up bonuses, MO deposits and churning in general you should be all good for the long and rewarding (travel) relationship with Chase.

Unless you've been arrested in the past (like me). Pretty sure they'd love me to death otherwise.

Did they come right out and tell you that?

Seriously, given all the weak-minded crap Chase and almost every other bank has done at one time or another, it sounds like the perfect case of the pot calling the kettle black.

No. In fact, neither Chase, nor USAA would give any specifics aside from "reputational risk", nor would they disclose the source of their information. And the CFPB was useless in getting the answers. That's just the only thing in my history that would suggest a rep risk in my mind.
