Rental Collection

I had to break a lease when I bought my house in 2016. I think in NC they have 3 years to collect rental debts. If this is true, is there a place where I can find a sample letter to tweak to get it removed from my report? The actual leasing company no longer exists, by the way,

It hasn't been 3 years yet, but credit reporting expirations and statutes of limitations aren't connected.

How much do they say you owe them.

I also just realized that I put the wrong date. I bought my house March 1, 2012. I apparently need more coffee before posting in the morning. Jeez!

The relevant date would be the date the rental debt became past due. Seven years after that date the CRAs are supposed to remove it from your reports. Some are known to remove it earlier with an "obsolete" dispute. https://creditboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=521705&view=&hl=&fromsearch=1

If it's particularly important for you to try and get this removed before it's 6-12 month natural death occurs, the fact that they don't exist (assuming no one purchased or inherited the debt) might mean that they will not respond to "any" dispute.

Sorry I fell off the face of the earth there. I sent a debt validation letter about 6 months ago and the collections agency came back with the rental lease and itemization (IIRC). They've been reporting each month ever since. The open date is 4/26/2012, so way past the SOL to collect in North Carolina (the state I live and where the debt occurred). I'll try an obsolete letter in a month or so. I need to finance my car this summer, so I need it gone. :(
