Put the concierge services on some of the travel cards to the test...then if they don't come through, you have a potential bargaining chip come AF renewal time...

That's a good idea.  Let me see if the Amex Platinum concierge can accomplish something for me.

There are no reservations available at Gibson's in Chicago on Friday or Saturday, 8/13-14.

Normally we'd hit Benny's for steak, but it closed last February.  :(

Hugo's Frog Bar serves the same steaks, if you are interested.

Also, if you are up to going outside of the city, there is a GIbson's in Rosemont.

Hold time to reach a concierge is 90 minutes right now.

Thanks for the tip about Hugo's.

like with many other things, mornings tend to be the best time to call many services...mid to late afternoon...not so much.

I tried this morning also.  It was more like 30 minutes.  I didn't have time to wait in either case...

I'll try again tomorrow.

They do have a callback option, but I can't always drop what I'm doing to make dinner reservations.  :)

Clearly you were not thinking...

But...chili...reminds me of those 99 cent chili cheese burritos Taco Hell used to have on the menu...a few of those and a packet of fire sauce for each...mmmmmmm.

I went to Costco for my prescription pickup and was hankering for a $1.50 Costco hot dog and drink combo ... well lo and behold the snack bar was gutted. All the equipment - gone. Pizza ovens were removed. Hot dog cooker was gone. Cash registers and ordering kiosk removed. Hmmmm. May need to duck into the other local Costco and see if its the same there.

My local recently brought back all the snack bar seating.

After landing in Tulsa it was well after 2pm and I had been up since 4am and had nothing to eat. I asked my relatives if we could pull over anywhere quick and easy for me to get a bite to eat. They insisted on ordering sandwiches from a mobile truck deli in their area. Okay I thought. It was a pulled pork sandwich on a white Weber's bun. The bread was soaked soggy with juice from the pork. I couldn't stomach it and I almost gagged. I do not eat this way at all. But, I was polite and just went along. Great trip. Glad I went but not fond of that kind of food.

CHILITOS!!  The only Taco Hell food I've ever LOVED!  😍

... and, once again, I'm dating myself.  You have to take the waybackmachine to the '90s for a time when TB called their chili cheese burritos: "Chilitos".  And, yeah, definitely "Fire Sauce" ;)

We decided on BLVD instead.

From the photos, the interior looks like a place that's trying too hard to be stylish (I prefer a cozier atmosphere with all of the emphasis on service and food) but the friend I'm meeting for dinner has been wanting to try it, so off we'll go.

I have not been to BLVD, but clients have said they enjoyed it.

too bad you won't be having GOOD 'que ;)

Actually didn't get any 'que. One night was expensive Asian (Sunda). Another night was bar food at The Flying Saucer after encountering 1-2 hour waits at the other restaurants we wanted to go to. The other nights we got back so late the only thing open was the hotel bar. Unless I wanted to go wade through the drunk bridesmaids having their bachelorette parties while barhopping on Broadway. Not me. Too old for that feces.

Hordes of vacuous 19 year olds with fake IDs in slutty outfits, and throngs of visiting Baptist conventioneers*, are among the main reasons I quickly grew tired of downtown San Diego, especially what we now refer to as "the Gaslight District."

* Interesting Venn diagram

Last night's dinner was mostly a winner.

Notable highlights:

  • Prime rib eyes.  The nearby Costco has Prime beef again, and the marbling on these was spectacularly subtle and evenly distributed.  I've mainly been buying New York strips lately after consecutively ending up with too many rib eyes that required too much trimming on the serving plate, but these were perfect.  One end was perfectly cooked, though, while the other was a bit too done, but overall these induced some dinnertime cooing.

  • Sweet corn from a local farmer's market.  I grew horribly tired of fresh sweet corn as a kid, but after the passage of a significant amount of time I can enjoy it again.  This was perfectly sweet and cooked just right, and while it didn't actually need butter, it got some anyway.

  • Baked potatoes.  I've been trying various ways to prepare these so the skins aren't tough and the insides aren't gummy.  I recently watched a video from America's Test Kitchen, and tried the method they recommended.  Problem is, it's impossible to plan an entire meal around immediately serving a potato when its internal temperature reaches 205 degrees.  I did the best I could to accomplish that, and the result was better than average.

I have been experimenting with healthy ingredient alternatives to the batter for fried okra. Last night was a win according to my DH. The problem I have been having is the bland taste due to lack of salt. Turns out freeze dried onions along with a little salt and Mrs Dash made the entrée delicious. The addition of Mrs. Dash surprised me because I remember using it years ago when it first came out and I never was that impressed.

So, the okra is fried in avocado oil. The batter is corn starch, flaxseed meal, baking powder, nutritional yeast, black pepper, garlic powder, Mrs. Dash, freeze dried red onions, and a pinch of salt.

Would this be in Mudville or SD? We have hoards of sweet corn at our local farmers market. Weekend before last they were selling for 4 for $1. If it wasn't for me being gone for half of August and 75% of September I would have bought some.
