Just got a phone call from new york. I live in Florida. Didn't answer, then called back and and an automatic answering machine said "thank you for calling portfolio recovery associates". I hung up. Am I right in believing they are breaking the law by calling me outside of business hours? Is this something I can claim as breaking the law so they drop the collection? They're trying to collect $994.

They aren't breaking any laws.

1692c(a)(1):

(1) at any unusual time or place or a time or place known or which should be known to be inconvenient to the consumer. In the absence of knowledge of circumstances to the contrary, a debt collector shall assume that the convenient time for communicating with a consumer is after 8 o’clock antemeridian and before 9 o’clock postmeridian, local time at the consumer’s location;

They can call between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM (your time). The law makes no reference to "business hours" or days of the week.

Is this account past the state statute of limitations to sue to collect a debt?
