I was wary of pulling the trigger simply because it seemed like the account was suffering from stuckage for so long...to the point that I was set to jettison the card since I wasn't using it for anything other than a few small purchases that were placed on the card just to show activity.

Smart move, brother @hegemony.  While I generally like AmEx a lot, their checking accounts are 💩 -- a waste of time and, if you buy checks, $.  Not sure WTF has gotten into AmEx lately, but they made yet another bonehead move in acquiring Kabbage.  Kabbage takes the 💩 levels to an all-time high.  

 

Unless AmEx checking carries a hefty SUB, the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages.  Although not a very important factor, you actually need to pay for checks.  WTF actually makes you pay for your first book of checks these days?  AmEx 💩 checking has no BillPay function so you are strictly limited to either writing checks or ACH transactions.  

 

AmEx ACH pulls take 9 fooking days to post.  I am positive this is by design.  When you make a payment to your AmEx credit card via the AmEx site, they use an ACH pull to get their money.  Those take 1 day to clear.  For checking ACH pulls, I have seen that the money leaves your targeted account within 3 days, but AmEx takes an additional 6 to post it to your account.  Sounds like some type of scam.

 

Unlike when you call AmEx customer service about your credit card, when it pertains to a checking account you get schlepped off to a different level of sub-human with an IQ < 3.  AmEx credit card customer service is, IME, virtually always stellar.  On the other hand, the AmEx banking side CSRs struggle to reach the level of a dyslexic chimp.  "All banks take 9 days to clear an ACH pull."  "We are the AMEx banking side and have growing pains."  And my all-time favorite, "Our AmEx checking customers don't want BillPay.  They use their checking account to pay their AmEx card bills."  Fook them and the crippled horse they rode in on.  (No disrespect intended to the horse.)

In the 'well, your timing sucks' category, I got an email from a carrier for a free domestic RT ticket, but it has to be booked a week in advance and leave on Tues/Weds.  Sort of rules out the prospect of my travel next week, since that is a Thursday departure...

-- billed under an affiliate company/location that wasn't a participating provider (despite using the same location as before), and

-- failed to pre-auth as required for a test -- once again jamming up the ins paperwork.
