MCLEAN, Va. and NEW YORK - Hilton (NYSE: HLT) today announced that American Express (NYSE: AXP) has been selected as the exclusive issuer for Hilton Honors co-branded credit cards in the United States, beginning January 1, 2018. The announcement follows a comprehensive and competitive bidding process aimed at creating long-term value for both companies, hotel owners, guests and Hilton Honors members. The terms of the new multi-year partnership remain confidential.

There will be no immediate changes for existing U.S. cardholders, and purchases made on existing co-branded credit cards will continue to earn Hilton Honors Points. Additional information will be made available later this year.

The interesting part IMO is what that will mean to the Citi Hilton card holders. Would they be converted to another Citi card, or converted to the AmEx card, kind of like a reverse Costco situation.

I would love to move my $81,000 Citi Hilton limit over to Amex, and then reshuffle my Amex limits.

Heh, I can't imagine how interesting some of those conversations are behind the scenes, given the different policies both companies have.

Hopefully, Amex will do better at that transition than Citi did when they got the Costco Amex portfolio.

My brother has been BL by Amex. He has the Citi Hilton Reserve. In the rare event Amex buys the Citi portfolio, I wonder if he would get an Amex conversion?

I am in the same boat as your brother...thus my interest. I had a Hilton and am sure I can get another via Citi, but don't want to just end up with another Citi product I don't use.

Since everyone is wondering and hypothesizing...

I wonder if AMEX pressed for a Hilton exclusive because they think (or know) that they are losing the SPG accounts for sure.

Chase has Marriott/RC, Hyatt and IHG. AMEX has Hilton now. Not really much left on the US side other than Radisson, Wyndham and Best Western.

I was thinking the same thing about SPG as well. Amex could have cut one heck of deal to make sure they didn't end up with no hotels at all in their portfolio.

I'm sure that's a big part of it. I don't see any way that Amex retains anything to do with SPG long term after the merger is complete.

I also doubt that Amex has any interest in buying Citi accounts.

what will happen to the customers that have the spg amex card? will they just keill the card or switch it over to a different product?

Most likely they will offer to switch it over to one of their non cobranded cards.

They will want to mitigate a total loss of that customer base.

For those keeping score at home:

Radisson - Club Carlson cards, issued by US Bank

Wyndham - Barclay's

Best Western - FNBO

So Citi will have no hotel partners, it seems.

I don't think Accor has a card

I wish there was a US Accor card since I stay at Sofitel/Novotel/Pullman properties around 25-30 nights/yr throughout China and the Phillipines (The Novotel Century Hong Kong treats me like a king and the Manila Bay Sofitel has one of the sickest buffets ever including a chilled chacuturie room).

I remembered the Red Roof Inn card today as I drove through Los Banos, California (and incidentally the place from outward appearances was a &hithole and you have a hard time reversing first impresssions).

Maybe Citi will go after Accor.

Obviously anything is possible, but not necessarily probable. I've always thought it was strange that there was a Fairmont CC. They only have around 20 US properties. Now Accor owns Fairmont so there's a couple more Sofitels and Pullmans to add to the mix but still I'd guess there's less than 40 Accor properties total in the US post-merger.

Doesn't Accor own Motel6 and Studio6? Edit- just saw they spun it off to a private equity
