Who/why would Equifax update payment history on an account that's closed?

The last thread didn't get much response but figured I ask this in a different way.

I paid off an auto loan in 2012 which was closed and got title in hand (subsequently my car was totaled just three weeks after & had to give the title to Progressive).

That account had number of lates but of course the payment history like most closed accounts stopped there.

But, Feb of this year, Equifax data shows they updated all the way to Feb 2017 making it look like I've been paying on the account on time.

How does this happen? Is Equifax in any violation? Is it considered re-aging?

screw up by OC lender

dispute online, and upload a copy of your old report showing that it was paid in full in 2012

joc, but did your score go up or down?

I think the issues is even worse than the the good reporting. It's showing current status as 120+ days late.

OP do you have an older credit report with the old reporting we could see?

I figured OC is the only one that can have these changes made ugh. Satander so not surprised...

And yes, my score did dipped by 7 points; could be bucketing or whatnot but also my utilization went from 8% to 10% (now back to under 1% but won't update until 2-3 weeks until next statement).

Yes, I disputed last week and just waiting for their response :)

Yes, this is from Dec 2016.

And so you don't have to go back and forth from the other thread :)

From Feb 2017

Now the Feb 2017 is correct looking at the backdoor and triple checked. The update is still there.

OP... Even in your older credit report it states account status is 120+ days past due. Regardless it needs to be updated. I'm guessing the activity on the account being newer is what caused the score drop.

I wasn't paying attention and you're right. In fact I was disputing this awhile back as far as the payments not matching. CRA's came back as verified. I started the dispute as a lot of data didn't match at all where one month I paid on time with one bureau and another with 30/60 days late.

That happened to me with Santander on EQ only as well (now deleted from EQ).

I tend to think it is an EQ issue because EX and TU don't update for me either.

Do you feel I have leverage as far as Satander and/or CRA furnishing incorrect data (whoever is correct as data isn't matching)? All I would want is for Satander to just delete the tradeline if the data isn't matching at all across the board? Wishful thinking perhaps :)

Santander is nearly impossible. Try whatever you can.

IIRC I finally got it removed from EQ after about 50 disputes. It was just luck because it's stuck to EX and TU, so I have a bunch of 30 and 60 day lates, the last of which won't age off until Dec 2018.

The good news is that the EQ tradeline is still dropping Mar '19 (7 years from DOFD).

My recommendation is to let this lie and work on constructive measures to improve your credit. (If you've got time on your hands, feel free to whack away at Santander/EQ some more; but in my own experience, it was more productive and emotionally rewarding to spend time enhancing your positive credit.)

Santander and Navient (I have lates on EX/TU but EQ is clean for whatever reason) is the two negatives I'm trying to clean up until if falls off two years from now.

Yep, while my utilization is almost 0% I'm really attacking anything I can which are the two accounts with lates to see if there's any way to get rid of them :)

the current status should be paid and closed

not 120 Days past due -

you should jack attack it in writing,,

Will do!

Thank you all; will update if anything comes out of this :)
