I opened a military star credit card in January of 2012. I had a perfect paying history until October 2014 through December 2014. I thought I had set up automatic payments for the payment to come out and did not. When I realized what had happened, I phoned customer service around January 15, 2015 to catch the payments up. They refused any payments and informed me that my account had been sent to collections. I tried several times via telephone to get a payment in to catch up the card to no avail. Yesterday is the first time I received anything from Transworld about this account.

Should I just agree to pay them, a collection agency, and set up payment arrangements. I owe $3500 give or take.

I'm currently dealing with Transworld and an old Star Card account. My best advise is yes, you should pay it. I know it is not the answer you want, but I'll explain why.

Your military Star Card isn't like your typical collections. They play by similar rules as if you owed debt to the government (which is their own set of rules) and do not need a court order to garnish your paycheck.

I currently have a garnishment and owe about $5,000 and the only reason I did not not fight this in any way is because they were gracious enough to keep all of this off my credit report. Though if I buy a house, it will obviously show from my paystub and count as a DTI ratio.

What I did do however was have an attorney negotiate the amount I owed. I have a Legalshield subscription (basically a legal insurance) so I can call upon a law office when needed. My original amount was about $7,500 but they negotiated it down to about $5,000.

Work out a plan with them now before you get to that point. My understanding is they usually require some sort of down payment and then will accept monthly payments to pay the debt down.

Hope this helps. Good luck and if anyone has any other experience on this, I hope they chime in.
