Big Canyon a mile from me was the most expensive in the country for a while. Not sure about now.

 

I know of another Mayacama in Sonoma County that was $250K prior to the 2008 crisis.

 

Most golf clubs are equity memberships so at least you can sell them in the future.

 

Coral Casino Beach Club in Santa Barbara is $350K to join. Has a hard membership cap and a long waiting list.

 

LA also has some social clubs. The California Club and the Jonathan Club are the two "elite" clubs. The initiation and recurring fees are one thing, getting vetted and accepted is the most difficult part.

Truth is, often these membership fees are perks companies pay to attract and retain proven executives.

If I could afford it, I would join just to meet these execs and try to gain their business.

If I were a member, I would be able to afford it. (maybe) That price tag is awfully steep, and it would take a lot of placements to make up that cash.

I've always hated golf and I don't get the attraction of country clubs. Never golfed or joined any of them. And our company did not pay for memberships for the execs that did.

There's a reason it's called the "old boys club," folks. Because it IS a club, and it's full of old frat boys who can afford it.

I work at one in the backoffice Accounting world. We have different levels of membership and entry fee varies, but our top is at $70,000.

 

We have members join and quit every year, but never a shortage.

Growing up my family belonged to a country club in a medium sized city. Our club was not as ritzy as the ones above, but pretty nice.

 

While movies only show old men playing golf, they are great for families. During the summer's I would go almost every day and swim and play tennis and sometimes golf. It was a safe place for kids to hang out at.

 

I've been to some of the really expensive clubs (as someone else's guest) and I could see much of the same thing. Lot's of families and kids having a good time.

There is a club near me in OC that opened about 10 years ago and had a $300K price tag to join. Now the same membership can be had for $100K. Gotta admit, I would be pretty pissed if I was one of those initial members.

For business owners and executives, there can be a lot of profitable business connections at a country club that they normally wouldn't have access to. It's not an expense, it is an investment. Like I said, I can see both sides of the coin, purely socioeconomic.
