Hopefully, I am posting in the right area even in the enlistment process. I am in need of both credit and military expertise here. I am working to get into a rating in the Navy that requires me to get a TS clearance. This clearance will be checking my credit history and I have a debt under $900 in collections. The internet gave me some answers but not enough to clear my doubts.

1.) The credit card was activated in 2010 and expired in 2013. I don't know when it was sent to collections as I was out of a job and was wondering who and what to start calling to get rid of it. I also do not remember my last payment, even knowing the company was willing to settle for half of it when I became unemployed. Can I dispute it for being unemployed and unable to pay it? I need to get rid of this ASAP and I don't have time to take anything to court. Same for asking them to knock it off my credit reports as well. I know they aren't obligated to do it, even if it is paid off.

2.) Should I start a payment plan with them that will upset my credit for the next seven years, even with it marked as paid, to more likely guarantee my job letting me in?

3.)Can I call up the original company even though the loan has been sold to a collector and see if that deal still stands that they made me years back. (I doubt this but question it anyway)

4.) I hate to ask relatives for money and have already leaned on them enough. How can I persuade the collectors or anyone else to get it cleared as soon as possible if it doesn't fall under the SOL for my state? As far as the internet says, it is four years for credit card debt.

I really want this job with the Navy so anything that can expedite this process before the TS comes through would be such a help. I do have enough money to start payments on this collection, I am just worried that it won't be done in time and I will lose my chances for this job. I also know 90% the internet prefera not to pay collections if they can help it, but this situation is looking grim to me in any other sense. I will be getting everything in statements and writing when I can help it.

When did you stop paying on it? Lots of military here and lot of people familiar with TS clearance. Just be patient. How much money are we talking about?
