I've mentioned before that Kohls is the king of price manipulation and sales abuse, but at least if you really put your mind to it you could get a somewhat decent deal.

 

In the past, you waited for a 30% off coupon. Hopefully this coincided with a regular sale. On the rare occasion that the Vinn Diagram worked out, you had two or three days to launch your attack. I'm afraid to say, there is no way to even get Amazon prices any more. And God forbid you don't have a 30% off, you will be royally fleeced.

 

I had a 30% off to use today and today only. I needed some new running shoes and some Levis. So off to Kohls I go. The Levi's I wanted were $59 buy two get 2nd pair half off (mind you, they cost $45 on Amazon). I have done this before and the 30% off brings them down to a reasonable ~$35 a pair. I then proceed to the shoe department and find an OK pair of Nike's I could live with. $65 on sale for $45. Then I grab a discounted T-shirt ($20 down to $9.99).

 

At the register she scans the 30% off coupon and announced that my jeans and Nikes are excluded. I would only get $3 off the T-shirt. After bitching she said that pretty much any name brand item is now excluded from the 30% off mailer. It never was that way before. I still got the jeans and shoes for about what Amazon charges so I let it be.

 

She then gave me my Kohls cash. $20. I got to the car and looked at the receipt. I saw I spent $158 and should have gotten $30 Klohls cash ($10 for every $50 spent). But my pre-tax purchase was $148.99. Missed the mark by $1.01.

 

I went back in and said I'd like to return the items and re-buy them with an additional T-shirt to get the additional $10 KC. She said that I couldn't re-buy the exact same thing as the inventory would have to be returned to stock and that would take a day or two. Since the jeans and the shoes were literally the last of my size, I sulked off.

 

There is no getting one over on Kohls anymore folks. Not even for a reasonable deal. I used to recommend this store card as the only one I knew was a deal. I can now not recommend any store card.

The coupon may have worked on this item... which was already an astonishing $55.01 off!!!!!!!!!!

The Kohl's card was never worth it IMO.

 

It really used to be. I enjoyed the challenge of Vinn diagramming their crap and beating them at their own game. It was advanced shopping, but I came way with the same feeling someone sleeping with Paris Hilton and not catching anything would

As long as it's done in the SAME day, you could have bought a pack of overpriced gum or candy to spend the $1.01 or so and gotten your extra kohls cash by showing them your receipt. I have done it before. Even if you no longer care, someone else might learn something from this ;-)

She didn't suggest this or any way out of my dilemma. In fact a gentle nudge nudge to buy a pack of hair scrunchies sitting right there at the register would have endeared me to, if not Kohls, that ring up gal. They are in on it I tell you.

No, they don't tell you, but they will do it. My guess is the cashier's are encouraged NOT to find ways to help the customer save the most amount of money. A couple of years ago, as long as it was within the same sales promotion you could do that. Then the rules changed and it had to be within the same day. With that said, I haven't shopped in Kohls in almost a year... they built a Beall's outlet a few blocks from my house and I do all of my clothes shopping there. I come home with a whole bag of clothes for $50

I've had fairly good luck there in the past, but I can see the logic in what you're saying, and it's valid.

With that said, I buy a LOT on Amazon. I'm also a moderately high ranking Amazon reviewer... but the reason why Kohls has an advantage, in my eyes, is because I can leave with whatever I find... and the things that I find are generally things that I need to try on and make sure they fit and what not. Yes, I could leave and go order the exact same product on Amazon and probably save 25% or better on some things, but it's not worth it to me. There are a few occasions where I'd still prefer the brick and mortar stores, and this is one of them. Shoe stores are another. I don't like to order shoes online. If I'm spending the money, I want to walk out of the door with it--knowing that they fit, and knowing that I can just bring it back if there's an issue.

I bought a Kitchenaid mixer for my girlfriend when I first got my card and I really racked up on points. With the various discounts around Christmas that I was able to stack, I got it cheaper than refurbished units were going for--and I walked away with a ton of Kohls cash. I actually bought myself a pair of shoes with the Kohls cash... lol!

I'm a bargain shopper. I'm damn good at it. Kohls (as does eBay) changes prices at a whim. Still doesn't mean you can't get a great deal....

I've found different stores are much more or less customer friendly. The normal store we shop at, which is rare anymore, I haven't taken a coupon or flyer to in forever. I just smile at the teenage girl working the register and ask her what deals she has for me. If she even starts to hesitate, I tell her I got something in the mail but...

However, almost every time she'll just grab a 30% coupon from near the register and scan it. For the record, I've never had anything excluded from the discount, but it's been a month or so since the last time we were there.

 

As far as the prices being jacked up, well yeah. That's obvious. But I always head straight to the 70% - 80% off racks first, so that's a help. I can't shop online for clothes or shoes though, too picky. Unless I'm buying Levis or something that I'm already familiar with.

 

In any case, I can usually get a good amount of clothes for really reasonable prices. But it's work, and I'm cheap.
