Can fund it once the account is opened. Your savings will show -$5. I deposited money via Paypal after my account was opened and applied and got instant approved for a credit card before I funded my account.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but how do you do that? I have (in the past) transferred money from PayPal (from small Ebay payments) to my bank account. Is that what you mean or something else? When I opened an account at PNC, I was able to fund it with a debit/credit card.

Wondering the same thing. They opened my accounts, so I went to my local CU to to a shared branch deposit. Navy doesn't do that? No problem with any of the other CU's.

Don't think they participate in shared branching, but you can try automated deposit at a co-op atm. You can't use the Mobile deposit until you've been a member for 30 days. I'm going to try putting a few dollar bills in later at a credit union's co-op atm later see if it works.

Penfed you need to wait 90 days to use the mobile deposit I was told on the phone by them.

Earlier in the thread somebody claimed speaking with NFCU to verify membership via membership of the Navy league San Diego chapter.

I will add that NFCU IS a sponsoring organization of the Navy league.

However the instructions are to join my mailing or faxing in an application because the online application requires an answer to part C asking sponsoring members affiliation. Those mailing or faxing in applications have been leaving part C open

This makes me a bit suspicious that membership, if granted, might be in error subject to later revocation as we have heard some people suffer

It is possible that NFCU allows membership through sponsoring organization as much as it is possible that those who have gotten membership have sent simply gotten it falsely or in error pending possibility of later investigation

Not sure what you are talking about, but the fact is ...

Navy Federal membership is overseen by a Charter and National Credit Union Administration. In 2010 USA Federal Credit Union was merged with Navy Federal at the request of the National Credit Union Administration. As part of the due diligence with merger, Navy Federal was asked to continue to accept USA Federal Credit Union's Charter which includes the Navy League of United States San Diego Council. While the information you provided is accurate, Navy Federal does not actively market this information for those who are not eligible in their own right. Additionally, we do verify all membership applications to make sure everyone who has applied does fall with in our field of membership.

"Navy Federal was asked to continue to accept USA Federal Credit Union's Charter which includes the Navy League of United States San Diego Council."

OK folks, if I read that correctly, basically anyone can join NFCU. I don't remember USA Federal's field of membership, but basically anyone could get in through several different ways. If they still exist, use those. No need to bombard the Navy League of San Diego, if they don't care for out of area memberships.

What about the PayPal option? You and Konrad have been a huge help in this thread.

Add your navy Checking to your paypal account (by entering the account and routing number on the Paypal site in your account wallet) and Paypal will deposit and withdraw 2 small balances (<$1 each) which may take a couple business days (to prove you really own the account), then login to your paypal to comfirm and they'll ask what those two deposits where. Once you comfirm then you're free to transfer money to and from your account.

And my pleasure to help as much as I can! :D

Wonderful site known as archive.org

https://web.archive.org/web/20100617050018/http://www.usafed.org/about_us/membership.html

  • Spouse of a person in the Credit Union field of membership
  • Member of any listed associations below
  • Officer or Credit Union Volunteer who serve as members of the Board of Directors or the Supervisory Committee
  • Retired Pensioners or Annuitants from any of the listed companies
Companies:

  • Active Duty Military

  • Pechanga
  • Covenant Care
  • Southwest Marine
  • City of Murrieta

  • San Diego Navy League

Can't find a website for the Prime Meridian Association, so whatever it is, it seems like it doesn't exist anymore or it merged or something with another organization (Not saying it doesn't exist, just that I can't find a website or much info at all on google)

And what do you mean if they don't care for out of area memberships ??? How did you come to that conclusion?

From glancing at this string I got the impression that the Navy League of San Diego is starting to not accept out of area memberships.

I'm thinking there was sort of small donation/membership to an association to join USA Fed if you didn't otherwise qualify. I do remember Pechanga. It's a large native American hotel and casino about halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Been there. I assume workers there can still join Navy Federal.

This is all I have found about Prime Meridian Association so far:

For example, United Services of America FCU in San Diego allows people to join the credit union by becoming a member of Prime Meridian Association. For information on Prime Meridian people are advised to contact the credit union.

The creation of Prime Meridian Association fulfills a vision articulated by Mary Cunningham, the CEO of United Services of America FCU.

She wrote several years ago: “I believe that every red-blooded person living in America deserves the right to join a credit union, regardless of where they live or who their employer is or what language they speak…I believe the common bond is formed when a person walks into a credit union and lays down their $5 to join a credit union along with all the other members using it.”

I found Prime Meridian Association mentioned in an old topic here:https://www.fatwallet.com/forums/finance/1030001/

That started the NFCU membership rush years ago.

It probably no longer exists.

Thank you, I clicked their link to the Prime Meridiain Association from that Fatwallet topic and it links to the USA Fed site that (obviously) no longer exists, but archive.org has an archive of it!!!!!!

That was false, and was started by someone at Myfico looking to create drama and cause trouble.

I app'd the day my account was opened and got instant approved for Cash Rewards with a $1600 limit, and few days later requested a credit limit increase for $25,000 (always do $25,000 and they will counter with the max they will offer you) and got it increased to $5000. Still haven't received the card in the mail but got my debit card in like 3 business days. The credit limit increase had to be manually reviewed and was an additional hard pull.

I say go for it unless you don't mind waiting for a sign up bonus.

I was sent a PM today about a way for basically anybody to gain access to NFCU. I undertook some reconnaissance, called their customer service line and asked some specific questions, and it appears it is a valid option.

1. Join the San Diego council of the Navy League. This costs $25. When you fill out the Navy League application, there is a part that says they will assign you a council membership by zip code unless you otherwise specify a chapter. Specify SAN DIEGO.

2. Print out your SAN DIEGO council Navy League membership docs.

3. Print out an NFCU membership application.

4. Complete printed out NFCU membership application.

5. Scan/email SAN DIEGO council Navy League membership docs, NFCU application, 2 forms of ID and throw in a utility bill for good measure. Email to membershipdocs@navyfederal.org It can also be faxed (I don't have the fax and was driving when I made the phone inquiry). It could also be done in-branch. IT CANNOT BE DONE BY PHONE, AND IT CANNOT BE DONE ONLINE.

CreditHunting brought this to my attention (Oorah) There was a MyFico post involved, but I called and check into the details before I made this post.

We need some guinea pigs. Please post your results.

I emailed my docs tonight. Will see what happens.

Just wanted to thank K-man and PPP for all the detailed info in this thread and for bringing it to the attention of all the members of CB.

If the San Diego Navy League is a permanent solution to join, we finally can put this issue to rest. Whew! At least until this method ends. That's always a possibility.

Now we can move on. USAA currently has stricter limits on who can join. Let's work on them next. :)

Do you have to maintain an annual membership with the Navy League?

In other words, will there be a $25 AF?

No, once you are in a credit union, you are usually in for life. Job change, moving, decide you dont like the Navy League...none of that usually matters.

So ima sucker for this....

Just joined the San diego navy league....sent the $25 + $10 donation for good karma.

I printed out the 'congratulatory' membership form from the navy league.

Do i need to wait for the navy league membership card and docs that they're sending in the mail, or do I go ahead and print out the NFCU app, and send that in with the congratulatory Navy league membership form that I juust printed out when I joined?

TIA
