NEW: Use Delta Miles Instead Of Cash To Pay For Delta Tickets...

Recommended Posts

I presume this will give you access to all available seats, not just the award seats?

that is how I read it. perhaps FT has more details?

Hey, I can help with this one!

Yes, I believe you can use Pay With Miles in any cabin. I'll confirm when I get to work tomorrow.

Okay...thanks! Make sure to find out if paying with miles is treated the same as paying with $$$, that is, you have access to all available seats on a given flight, not just the handful of award seats available on that flight.

From http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/skymiles/use-miles/pay-with-miles.html

How Do I Use It? Ready to start paying with miles? It's easy.
  • Log in at delta.com
  • Search for your flights
  • Select flights marked as Pay with Miles eligible
  • Choose from the list of Pay with Miles options in the "Trip Summary" page, you can select miles, money or the combination of both—whatever works best for you
  • After you make your selection, simply continue with booking your ticket
  • If you choose to pay for a fare with both miles and a credit card, use your Delta SkyMiles Credit Card to pay for the remaining ticket price—don’t forget you earn double miles if you use your Card for the portion of the ticket you buy

Hmmm...

I just searched and every flight I found was eligible.

On one of the flights I found Miles Redemption at 12,500 and the cash rate was 88.28. Redeem 5,000 miles and pay 38.28

Really only about 33.00 since you'd pay a little over 5.00 in fees when redeeming an award flight.

Again... It's a nice option to have

This isn't new.

I've had this option for a couple years.

And it's terrible value.

You can always get more than 1c per mile with award tickets.

Of course...IF you can find award seats on the flight you want.

Got an email about this yesterday and it never was available for me. I think you're thinking of the pay with miles and cash option. With that specific option you need to have availability for award flights which I never seem to have found for the miles/cash option.

This is more universal and it seemed to apply to every flight I've searched so far.

I also posted an earlier example of where this option actually came out as a better value.

Again... I'm not stating that you can't get better redemptions for mileage awards, but there could be some use to this.

Since they devalued the miles you can pretty much always find an award seat on every flight.

Although that may be because I get access to more seats being Diamond. Not sure.

But pay by miles or any combination of miles and cash has been available with the Amex card for years.
