What are the best tactics? I feel like I have done pretty well in the past, but self doubt always creeps in, you always think there was another 1k you could have gotten off the sticker... Etc.

Since you are the experienced crew, AND I am helping my 19 year old buy her first car... Help a guy out! :)

Hopefully base includes BT connectivity since it is becoming a requirement these days in more than a few states.

I "believe" it is standard on these, But going to take a look at it in the morning and hopefully negotiate a deal.

Also search online regionally and compare prices and see if you can get a local dealer to match or beat the best price you can find.

Really as long as you know the pricing on what your searching for you will do ok for yourself. It's when you go into a dealer looking at everything and don't know what others are paying for the same vehicle.

With the internet now you often find the best price listed online and that's really the best price they will do.

Personally I hate when care dealers don't post prices online, I just move on when I don't see a price.

Also you mentioned a base model sometimes vehicles with certain packages will have additional discounts so you may get a lot more for just a little more money.

My local Kia dealership is advertising the 2016 Base with automatic for $14,435 with a sticker price of $20,478 which seems like a good deal but probably includes every possible incentive. You may not qualify for every incentive offered. With the $650 doc fee (yikes) and $300 sales tax (we have a cap) That would be 15385 out the door (plus registration which I'm not sure how much that is). Depending on your sales tax, the 15.8k OTD you were quoted doesn't seem too bad. I'd probably offer 15k even and see if they take it. They probably won't but they may meet you in the middle.

I like the cargurus website. It is like an autotrader type place for new and used vehicles. I just like how they have it setup better though. Lets you know how long the vehicle as been on the lot too.

From what I've experienced lately, dealers don't want to budge much from their internet prices. This seems even more so with used cars.

Which coincides with the terminology changes you see in automotive from auto "dealers" to "stores" or "retailers". The late, great Saturn taught a few people that if you put a good price on a car and don't give people the usual plaid jacket and "what will it take to put you in this car today!" crap that people still buy cars. Another one is CarMax - they are a no haggle retailer. Also with websites out there like NADA, KBB, Edmunds, and TrueCar you know what others are paying for similar cars.

No haggle pricing just means they won't break a few eggs to make an omelette.

I am pretty damn happy. Daughter is on the loan as well. 66 months @ 2.9%

Time for her to learn her way around the process. :) We sign off and take delivery in the morning.

Nice work! But on the original question, I want to throw in a different perspective. The advice to basically research and know what the car is really worth is certainly important, and nothing's wrong with the idea of saying no to high-margin add-ons, but beyond that is it really important to pick up every last penny off the table?

This one turned out well, but nothing's worse than making yourself miserable over the deal afterwards instead of enjoying your new car. At some point, you have an educated understanding of a price you're comfortable with and then just enjoy the new toy and don't worry about the rest. :)
