Actually I mainly use cash and use my credit like cash. I spend less and rely on it less. It is why my rebuilding has been quicker in my opinion. I've seen what credit can do in a bad way when it is relied on. I use it for a purpose.

Just use your credit card as if it were a debit card. If you don't have the $$ in the bank, you don't buy.

Or at least have a strict timeframe on when you will have said money. Paycheck drops in a week? Go ahead, fill the gas tank. Two weeks? It's time to learn how to hypermile.

Of course, one shouldn't be living so close to their means that they are counting on a paycheck to bail them out, either.

VintageWillow this is exactly what I do and I don't have a lot of debt. If I income loss I don't lose my credit. Don't spend what you don't have all is golden.

Wrong use credit like cash and you won't be rebuilding like me because you won't have to. I use it for the points only or perks.

The only things that should be purchased with cash are those that cannot / should not be traced back to you.

Even if you pay cash, it can be traced back to you if someone is motivated enough.

Being a recent convert from cash to credit card spending, not having to empty the pants pockets of coins accumulated as change from the days purchases is a nice benefit in addition to all the rest.

LOL -- back in my cash-only days, DGF used to surprise me with mini-vacations, funded with the change she collected from my dresser. :)

I shop in Winco and they only take debit or cash... and yes, I do like shopping there. Great prices and huge selection..it's worth taking $40 out of the ATM on the way to their store. I also still use cash for small purchases of a buck or two, tipping in restaurants... there is still the every-now-and-again, use for it

For stores like this. I use Discover debit and do one swipe per item. If they won't take credit then I'll still get my rewards, 10c at a time.

What's the rush? Why not write a check for each item?

It makes no sense to me either, and I am a millennial! I've had the same 3 twenties in my wallet for 4 months, and have yet to spend them. I think I have used cash once in the past year, and that was only because a cab driver refused to take a card. Other than that, EVERYTHING goes on a rewards card.

Also, who the hell uses the debit option? It makes absolutely no sense. Even if I was going to pay for something with my debit card, I always use the credit option.

ETA: The only thing things that require payment in cash are illegal.

And even with that, I hear that some "street pharmaceutical representatives" accept credit cards through the square...

Good point, I use cash so infrequently that I stopped carrying any in my wallet. I have a few twenties tucked inside my belt in case I lose my wallet or get mugged or something. At least that's my rationalization. Haven't lost my wallet in over 30 years and never been mugged.

Cash only doesn't imply illegal. We have a vegetable stand that sells fresh produce grown in their back 40. Cash only. Almost all the high end, local restaurants get produce from them or at least claim they do. We buy their corn in season. It's damn good.

Checks don't give me 10c per transaction in rewards! :D

Too much trouble IMHO ;-) to each their own though. I also don't price match at the register..or extreme coupon because my time is worth something too...

On my frequent business travels, I still need to keep some cash on me. A few parking decks/lots are still cash/coin only that I have to park in.

This .... You seen those parking lots where you stuff the folded bills into the slot corresponding to your parking spot number?

Yep. Those are exactly what I'm talking about. They still exist. Lol. Same thing with coin only parking meters.

It does add up, the change that sat in a jar for a year until I got around to putting into the checking account now sits in a money market account. A few bucks a year extra on interest earned.

I have been surprised how the total benefits of playing the credit card game have quickly reached a respectable amount. A few cents from rewards, a few from the portals, checking store gift card discount, and stack it all together. Add in some sign up bonus and 0% APR and after less than 6 months I am ahead by a solid grand. Most of my new habits have been learned as a result of CB.

I still value convenience and speed enough to carry and use cash for certain times even when credit card could be used.
