Citi AA Exec. One year anniversary and $450 annual fee just hit.

Last year got the 75k bonus, used the $100 GE and then took a 15k mile retention bonus.

This year the retention offers were:

1. $250 statement credit for $3k spend each month for 3 consecutive months; or,

2. 15k miles for $5k spend within 3 months.

I have the AA Pt and the Prestige which together give essentially the same benefits so I decided to close the Exec.

But, I didn't want to lose the CL. CSR offered to move it to another card without a hard pull but the "system said it was not eligible." Neither the CSR, nor I could figure out why we couldn't move the CL.

So I PC'd the card to the no-AF AA Bronze.

Offered 25K to keep Amex plat for one more year. I value these points at more than $0.01 per point if used to transfer to airlines. This together with the $200 airline credit effectively wipes out the annual fee. My use of the card was

modest after spend to get the 100K bonus, and I did hit the centurion lounges about 5-6 times over the one year period since I got the card which I also consider to be a valuable benefit.

On the Citi Prestige I was offered 7X at hotels, airlines, and travel agencies for six months up to a maximum of 35K total bonus points.

Glad I saw this topic which reminded me to call.

Personal cards with AMEX this year.

EDP: $100 or 15k MR. ~$100k spend.

PRG: $175 or 25k MR. ~$135k spend.

SPG: $50 or 7k starpoints. ~$80k spent.

Took the points for all.

Lil goofy, your spending habits...

My guess it wasn't habit, but instead a planned attack.

The debut of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers a great opportunity to negotiate retention offers on other

prime cards including Citi Prestige, AMEX plat/gold, and airline cards offering lounge access for hefty fees.

Other issuers are nervous about the Reserve and will sweeten the pot more than they would have without

Reserve in the picture. I specifically mentioned the Reserve in conversations with Amex and Citi to get what I

thought were decent retention offers. At minimum, the Reserve is likely to stop further deterioration in card benefits

such as what has occurred with Amex plat. over the past few years, and the Citi Prestige in the past few months.

We may even see a more generous rewards structure in other cards.

Barclays credited my Aviator Red annual fee no questions asked.

Asked the Filipina to transfer me to an Account Specialist. Told the Account Specialist, "I was previously told to call back once the AF had posted and they would credit it, as it couldn't be credited or waived prior to its posting." The lady started telling me all about the benefits of the Aviator Red, which I thought was a setup to pay the AF or downgrade, but then she finished with, "No problem, the fee will be credited within 2 days."

Chase BA. Was 3rd HUCA in a week.

No AF credit offer, no mileage offer, no spend offer.

Shifted all credit (had to leave $1K) to Freedom and closed account.

Couldn't get them to waive anything too. Happy with the 100k and was really thinking to keep for the companion, but the BA scamcharges are just simply ridiculous. So I ended up closing the card.

I put that card in the money with OM's deals last Nov/Dec and CardCash when they were selling VGC's. Probably have 125K Avios from it, and the wife has one also.

Looking forward to burning some Avios on JAL in the spring.

Also got 10K MR's for agreeing to the Pay-Over-Time feature

With 5x airlines, I'll keep this open another year.

To recap, that is:

$384 in AF credits and 27.5K MR's

Only total failure was Chase. I saw no recent reports for succesful retention offers listed on FT for the BA card either.

Also signed my wife up as an AU on 3 of my AMEX biz cards so she can M$ them while I'm out of the country and we can get the additional AMEX Offers. AMEX is express delivering them all at no charge.

Okay...my first year with the PRG is over, and the $195 AF just posted to my account. What is the best way to approach a potential retention offer with Amex?

I'll probably keep the card for now, anyway, but I want to try to get the most I can to keep it, if you catch my drift.

I just tell them my concerns with the AF and ask if there's any retention offer available before I consider canceling the card.

Okay...I just called Amex and asked. $100 account credit and 3000 MR points, no spend requirement. Guess I'll keep it another year.
