Today Amex gave me the option of either 20k mr points for 3k in spend or a $200 statement credit free and clear on my platinum card.

Got the same on my personal platinum. This is a card I plan to keep indefinitely unlike the business version of it which will have the annual fee hit in a couple of months. I'll probably close the business version regardless of what they offer me as they are unlikely to offer anything that can beat a new signup offer 12 months later. The personal platinum I'm keeping as it's worth it for FHR benefits alone.

I just got charged $75 on the Amex HHONORS Surpass.

Any suggestions on requesting retention offers?

Bump
Yeah, call and see what they offer. It's not like you get to tell them what you want. They give you an offer, or a choice of offers, or they give you nothing.

Since you can't churn personal AMEX bonuses, any cash or points worth $75 is basically a win.

1000 HHonors points is all that has been offered after several HUCAs

1000 HHonors points are not much, so you can't drive the decision to keep the card on that by any means. If the cards benefits like Gold status are not enough to justify the annual fee to you, then I don't see any reason for keeping it. I just got this card myself for the large signup offer they had a month or so ago, but I don't plan to keep it beyond the first year. While you can't churn personal cards like Konrad mentioned, the motivation for closing it is to free up a slot in the number of non-charge cards that Amex allows (currently 4 total across personal and business I believe).

Great thread, (thanks for all the valuable info).

I just finished with 3 calls to one year old accounts, (AF's already posted and paid). results below.

1:)

Aviator Red, AF waiver, (refund issued), 2% Gas, Grocery, Utilities for 3 months, (bonus mile cap 8,000).

2:)

Citi AA Plat, They offered *Admin removes vulgarity*-all, (not surprising since total usage was exactly $3,001 for 53k AA miles, LOL..). PC'd to a DC just to keep TL open and aging. AF refunded).

3:)

CSP, No retention offer, but when I talked about PC to Freedom they said I wouldn't get the standard 15k UR new card bonus. When I mentioned I'd think about just opening a new Freedom for the bonus, the specialist offered to PC the account to a no-annual fee CSP and refund the paid AF. I told the guy I didn't know there was such a product. He said you can't apply for it but a 1 year old CSP can be PC'd to a no annual fee card with the same terms and benefits, (including transfer of UR's to partners). This strikes me as valuable info for someone who generates most of their UR points on a Freedom but maintains a CSP for transfer purposes.

Oddly, I'm seeing an offer to upgrade my PRG to a Platinum now whenever I log into Amex. I LIKE my PRG, the Platinum wouldn't work for me unless it came with a crazy amount of MR points. It would've been nice to have had that offer for my seldom used green but eh, that card was a piece of crap anyway.

Barclay Aviator silver

Refused af waiver through numerous calls

Facebook message asking them to call me, offer to waive within 5 minutes

It's often said that the best advertising is word of mouth.

I think many companies are placing serious value on what is said about them on social media.

CIti AA Business Platinum Select offered to waive the $95 fee if I spend at least $95 this month. Seemed odd but I took it

Call back in a month and ask them for some sort of spend bonus. Like 1000 bonus AA miles every month you spend $1000. Makes it an easy 2x spend on $1K/mo

Interesting. I wonder if we just call and say we were requested to call via Facebook of we'd get these better offers.

I got this after complaining about the deceit associated with account upgrades via 30k spend for companion pass

I need to get the ball rolling on some of these. Are you guys just calling the standard numbers?

Often times you just call the std CSR #. Tell them you are contemplating cancelling the card, and would like to speak to a retention or account specialist. Sometimes you need to ask the CSR to speak to a supervisor, or a US based supervisor.

AMEX standard personal Gold

$50 statement credit

I had the AF waived year 1, so paying $75 for year 2 is acceptable, due to the death of D* and the pending loss of my Costco TE card (cards are over 20 years old)

Will say, the AMEX reps were disappointing. My other offer was to change to a no-AF credit card. Upon pressing the issue, it wouldn't be a change, but a new application and new account. Either the reps are snowjobbing the uniformed, or are uninformed themselves, as basically offer #2 was to cancel the card and just apply for something new. Not really an offer.

For this year so far, I tried Capital One and they waived the $59 fees on the Venture. I just called and ask, didn't mention anything about closing the account, and they just did it.

EtoA: Technically, I also had my Aviator fees waived, but that happened after they chose to close my account without an explanation. :(

Is it best to ask for a retention offer before or after the annual fee is posted? I have my AMEX PRG and SPG both turning a year old this month, not sure if AF will be charged in Jan or Feb.

One suggestion is to post your spend on the card (if you don't mind sharing). I have fairly light usage (6K and 2K) so not expecting much of an offer on either.

Yes, I normally call after the AF is posted.

I've called twice now on the personal aadvantage platinum select. The af just posted and I was shot down both times. I have business version of this that I successfully obtained an offer on. Any reason to keep his card open? I could move the limit to the ty premier.

Thanks

I was wondering if Citi was going to be stingier on retention offers after last week's smack down.

Maybe. It was a completely different experience than he previous card where I was successful. Maybe connected or maybe they are aware I was just given a retention offer

I closed my Amex Business Rewards Gold card. Annual fee just posted. I was offered 15K MR points, but declined. I should asked have asked whether there was a spending requirement, but since they didn't mention it there may not have been. Closed because I have plans to churn this.

Take the 15k then cancel the card.
