A retention offer is often handled by a special department of your CC issuer. Offers can range from no-strings attached points bonuses, AF waivers, AF statement credits, bonus spend offers or even a combination of these.

Like everything the usefulness of these offers will depend upon your individual needs. For instance, Amex offers up to 25,000 MR points as a retention offer for a heavily used PRG. Some people might think $175 AF is not worth the 25,000 points. To me, 25,000 MR points used properly might be worth $1,000 or more.

Also, in most instances, the usage of your CC will be a heavily weighted determining factor in the retention offer (if any) you receive. Do not expect to get a huge bonus from a sock-drawer card. Not that you shouldn't try, but be realistic. CC companies are businesses after all.

Please post your retention successes AND your failures to add to our database.

Is it best to ask for a retention offer before or after the annual fee is posted? I have my AMEX PRG and SPG both turning a year old this month, not sure if AF will be charged in Jan or Feb.

One suggestion is to post your spend on the card (if you don't mind sharing). I have fairly light usage (6K and 2K) so not expecting much of an offer on either.

Hat tip to Witz for pointing me to the thread....didn't come up right away in search. :good:

I have an 8-mo old Citi Premier card with a low $2k limit. Very little use because of this and a few failed attempts to increase it.

Called # on back of card and told automated system I wanted to close it.....immediately transferred and someone picked up.

No spending, or very little, over the last 4+ months. They offered 1,000 TY points and $95 statement credit if I spend $1k on the card each mont for 3 months.

AF isn't due until May so I decided to keep it open and take the bonus. Maybe they'll offer something else at the 1-yr mark coming up.

You don't have Mendel and my PM info? WTF Chuck?

You can get Citi offers every six months. Like clockwork

What a smart@ss response....I am deeply offended. Let me go complain to the butt hurt thread.

Thanks Konrad, that's good news.....if they won't increase limits I can at least squeeze them for retention offers. Most of my accounts are 6-18 months old so I need to do my homework. Good info!

Yes, Citi is good for something every six months.

My Citi AA Pt is getting 1000 bonus miles every month I spend $1K, and it's not a year old.

On a related note, Barclays told me to FOAD today for an APR reduction, a soft pull CLI and any kind of spend bonus on my Aviator Red.

Maybe you should start a whiney thread about it. Just make sure to put it in the feedback forum :P

And don't bring up your latent high school issues

Same. Annual fee hit on the aviator and I reduced it to the no af version. The card won't see any spend anyway.

I actually got the AF waived on the Aviator Red in Sept. I just can't get an APR reduction/soft pull CLI. HELL, I took a hard INQ and was denied any CLI a month ago.

I also haven't gotten any kind of spend offer since Feb 2015...

Called earlier on Aviator red that turns 1 year approximately Jan 15.

No spend on this card at all except whatever signup bonus requirements (if any, I don't recall).

AF waived and 5k bonus with $1k spend in 90 days.

Took it.

I stopped using my card and have called twice since. ...no bonus offers on the silver

No go on Citi AA plat open about 1 yr.

Offered to downgrade card.

I'll call back another day.

So you call to close, they don't offer, and you tell them you change your mind?

I tell them I'll think about it.

I called them the next day and they said the same.

Maybe I'll call them today too.

At the very least I'll call them after AF posts, try again, then maybe downgrade.

Makes sense. I realize my post may have come off as judgmental...definitely not what I was going for. More so for learning so I can do the same.

I just got charged $75 on the Amex HHONORS Surpass.

Any suggestions on requesting retention offers?

Bump

Yeah, call and see what they offer. It's not like you get to tell them what you want. They give you an offer, or a choice of offers, or they give you nothing.

Since you can't churn personal AMEX bonuses, any cash or points worth $75 is basically a win.

Not taken as judgmental at all.

It's a perfectly valid question.

I'm here for data points from others and to add mine.

The more info that we have that can be disseminated among us hopefully results in a more sound strategy in achieving credit goals.

My Citi AA annual fee posted, I called to close. They offered the no AF version of the card, I declined so I closed it.

My Barclay AA Red card AF also posted and when I called to cancel they offered to refund the AF, 500 bonus AA miles plus extra miles in certain categories. I accepted.

Both were extremely low spend after I met the bonus requirements a year ago.
