Things that have helped me the most on CB were the things I didn't know existed

* Reconning

* Obsolete disputes

* Backdoor numbers

* The fact sp CLIs can be had

1 and 3 have served me well. Explain 2 and 4.

Search for the "Master Obsolete Dispute" thread for information on obsolete disputes. It's been posted in recently so should be in the first few pages of threads.

Last bullet point was soft pull credit limit increases. Specifically Synchrony increases, the Barclays apr/cli trick, the Cap1 3rd statement cli request, and the Citi soft pull cli link. I've already used the Barclays trick and tap my Synch accounts on a schedule now, will be requesting Cap1 in March, and hope to have Citi success in May.

The useful things I've learned on CB depend on where I was in my journey, I've been a member for nearly 10 years.

At first, when I was repairing my credit, everything listed beforehand (previous messages) was invaluable.

Later, as I then started to rebuild my credit:

- Understanding FICO score factors

- Tradeline aging

- Amex D* (RIP)

- Recon, recon, recon

- Higher limits beget higher limits (prybarage)

Now, as I work on Credit Pimp Status, the most helpful information is which cards offer the benefits that work for me, high limits, etc.

Special shout out to Bob Wang, Mendlesshon, CV for all their hard work and knowledge.

Quietman

this above, plus B* in its time. Also Kman, Uber, BDK, MarvBear, and Shifter...always speakers of the truth and research. And HL, who IS still alive, BTW, and now in NYC.

Absolutely all of this - adding that credit repair is grueling sometimes, a sense of humor and patience goes a long way. Thanks to CV and many others for the laughs!

I learned how to profile my dates based on their credit. B)

Explain that one?

It's an old topic from years ago, I think it was deleted. The board spent weeks laughing at it. To make a long story short, I was dating a beautiful young woman and one night she offered to pay for dinner. I smiled and said sure and then she pulled out an "old orchard" credit card. :swoon: My jaw dropped. And it was at the time when cards were color coded which indicated their annual fee and potential credit limits, so I had a pretty good idea of what was going on with her credit. Needless to say that relationship didn't last due to some of her financial decisions.

Wait....I found it.....

I really need to start a new topic on this situation. LOL

A true CB classic - we all feel the pain of seeing your date offer to pay for dinner with a subprime card! So good to see BW posting and having fun. Thanks for sharing this one. :)

I'm pretty new here (only something like 6 months now), but I've learned more about credit in that short time span than I've ever *dreamed* of! I learn more and more every day! CB taught me how to remove some obsolete items from my reports, ask for a CLI on my Cap1 at 3 months (went from 500-4,000... I swear I'm still in shock), NOT apply for store cards, what to look for in a credit card (rewards, sign on bonuses, etc.), utilization matters A LOT, you can and should recon a denial (I would have never dared to question the almighty credit gods!)... I didn't even know the difference between FAKO and FICO scores! I thought credit karma was REAL, for crying out loud! I knew NOTHING when I came here (and still know very little compared to most folks on here, but I'm working on it) and I am eternally grateful for all the help I've received on CB! I messed up a long time ago and never thought I would be back in the credit game again. I'm sure I've made and will make more mistakes here and there on my credit repair journey, but CB has certainly helped cut them down to a minimum! Above all else, CB taught me that my credit worthiness is not a lost cause and it can and WILL improve with work, time and patience. Thanks CB guys and gals! :clapping:

This sounds like me before I found these boards. The average Joe knows so little about credit, and it is such an important part of life if you don't want to pay more than you have to in life. :good:

  1. I you took advantage of pre-recession credit limit increases and were able to keep them, stay off the phone and no more apps.

Diversity. Use many different cards every couple months. Keep a good mix of retail and bankcards; use them.

Importance of a long established credit history. It matters and little stuff like inquiries and new accounts has very little effect on score.

Do your research before attempting a credit line increases over 25K. If unsure, do nothing. Stay safe.

Predictability is a good thing. Avoid any unusual or exorbitant credit behavior.

In all seriousness, well I was serious about the dating, but one of the things I treasure the most from CB is making me aware of REWARDS!!!!!! My banks should be rewarding me for my business. I've turned into a cashback/points/miles guru because of these boards.

I really need to start a new topic on this situation. LOL

After my brothers first marriage fell apart, he made the decision not to propose to another without doing a credit check first. His 2nd wife has pristine credit.

As far as paying attention to what brand of plastic a person uses........guilty as charged. I do it all the time.

Good list. But I'm scared of retail cards. If its not a top tier card, I'm very hesitant.

Agree. I'm now paying more attention to rewards. I just got the venture 2x miles reward card. I want to pay my $5k total monthly bill on this card and earn something for paying all these danm bills.

This is really for my own benefit. I’m pretty sure most will benefit from this post have well.

I'd like to ask the folks, who have been here for a while and have seen great success, to list 5 or more posts that has helped you tremendously in your credit journey.

Hopefully everybody, who had success because of creditboards, participate. This will probably help new folks here who are trying to navigate the sites.

The feedback; good n bad.

My Top 5 useful thing that I've learned...

1. Having your credit report show 1 balance of 1% of your total available credit will earn you the highest fico score.

2. To get the highest credit lines, you need one high approval so seeking out a bank that gives out high credit lines is your pry bar and the other banks will soon follow.

3. To get most business credit cards, you need a good personal score. Most business cards don't report on personal except for cap1 so If you are using credit cards for business...Get your personal reports to the highest score possible, then apply for business cards and don't use personal cards for business as it will tank your personal scores if you carry a balance making it look like you are over your head in debt and then creating a downward snowball effect when you try to get new credit with decent interest rates.

4. Inquiries are not that big of a deal in the overall big picture

5. Once you reach a certain fico score, car dealers / banks rarely ask for proof of income when financing a car.

#6 and the most important lesson. You can pretty much get approved for almost any credit card when you DON'T NEED THE money. If you are ever in a jam and need cash quick...forget about it. Therefore apply for all the accounts you can when you are in a position where you don't need the credit and save them for a rainy day.

Bazinga!

I just added 8 cards in the last 6 weeks all with the incentive of sign up bonuses

I have to thank hege, Mendelssohn, and mfarmer for inspiring me to go for it.

8 in 6 weeks!! I've added 9 since the middle of January and was feeling guilty. You've relieved me of that feeling :wave:
