What more than likely happened... is someone opened a account in OP's name to launder the money. I'd bet it was transferred out of someone else's Checking Account, with a stolen password... or even worse, it could be a stolen tax refund.. that a fraudster planned on withdrawing.

This is not something you'd wanna fool around with. Although... OP's story isn't too off. If they closed a brand new account, and perhaps.. lied or played off concerns, they would be issued a check for the account balance. The real question is... who was the money stolen from, and how was it stolen. That's going to be the million dollar question.

Fraud like this happens all the time. It'd be extremely stupid for a criminal, to have stolen funds deposited in a account, in their own name. But who is holding the bag, for a account opened in someone else's name? I wouldn't want to be anywhere near those funds. The Police... may feel very differently about the situation, and OP having the $1,000 from a potentially fraudulent/stolen withdraw.
