Not sure why some want to see this cash cow go away.

Don't want to see it go away, just seems like they created an executive oh $h!t moment and trying to figure a way out.

It's crazy they unknowingly (??) created a 22%-23% cash back scenario like this with such a huge potential earnings.

I just got off chat with a rep and asked if a Shell Gas card is considered a gift card (which I knew it would be) so I can work into my gift card probing, then I asked how do they know it's gift cards. The rep responded with this...

Rep: "When charges are made on a credit card the merchant placing the charge actually decides the type of category it would fall into, that's how we would learn about the general type of purchases made."

Me: "Oh I see so the merchants code the gift cards a certain way?"

Rep: "They can, yes. For example Nordstrom differentiates if it's an in store purchase or an order by changing the name to Nordstrom Direct. Different companies might change the way a charge appears based on the type of purchase made."

Me: "Oh I see. Pretty cool stuff. So that's how you can tell if cash back was taken during the transaction?"

Rep: "Yes, on statements it will show the total purchased at a store and then under it they show the amount from purchases and then the amount done as cash back. When it comes to cash back, or Cash Over as we call it, it's limited to $150 every 24 hours."

I don't know if people knew this or not. It was pretty informational for me.

As one who has never hopped upon the Bash Train of Discover, today proved to be pretty frustrating with them. I went to check out with 4 $500 giftcards this morning at Walgreen's. After buying the first one, the second was declined. No worries, I can call and veriify who I am and proceed as planned.

After calling Discover and getting the thumbs up, I attempted the purchase a second time and it was declined again. At this point, I needed to head to work but called them during my commute. I was passed to the correct department and again told that I was good to go. After work, I stopped by Walgreen's and went to check out with 4 gift cards and handful of snacks except I was declined a 3rd time. I called back in and was assured that the card should go through this time and was declined a forth time. Thats when I left.

I called Discover on the way home just to vent. I told them that I understood the security protocol and actually welcome it. I dont mind calling in when their system triggers for suspicous activity. What I dont appreciate is being told that everything was good and trying a second, thrid, and fourth time just to like a fool.

Discover did tell me and I quote,"I am sorry that our system is flagging your account. We have no way of knowing what is causing it and there is no way to prevent it. I recommend you keep trying and always carry alternative means of purchasing." Thanks for the help. I will try again tomorrow. If it declines, I am going to wait a few days and then give it a shot.

Remember this capped so not a big deal. Thousand times more damage can be done with uncapped cards.

I didn't read through the entire thread, but I just saw mention of VGCs.

I already have an iPhone 6, so I upgraded to iOS 9 and added my Discover card. Says right on the screen "Get 10% Cashback Bonus on up to $10K of in-store purchases using your card in Apple Pay till 12/31/15. Excludes gift cards." I imagine this mean VGCs are excluded? Or is there some way that they don't know you are purchasing a VGC? Maybe a dumb question. Just curious!

I doubt it's trackable. I'll know on the 27th.

By this I assume you mean your statement will close 9/27.

Based on this from Discover's new T & C's, you might not know until 11/27?

Worst case, this would leave more than a month for people here to meet the 10k before 12/31.

BTW, I just dipped my toe into the MS* game today. 1 $500 Vanilla GC at Walgreens, (with the only speed-bump a comment from the cashier that debit + PIN was required). I just said I wanted to use Apple Pay, she called someone and she said ok.

Edit: Off topic, OK, the link to photobucket above works but how should I add an image on this board.

For anyone that doesn't want to click that link, The Discover T & C's say the additional 10% cashback/Miles under this promotion will post within 1-2 billing cycles.

Demand cash back that you should have earned from the transaction. Disco and Barclays will always break and give you the lost earnings.

I'm sorry I was genuinely interested in how they could tell for my own curiosity and report here to let you guys know so it's not a surprise when you're M$ bonus doesn't come through. Deals don't get killed because of one honest question from one person...they get killed from what you guys are doing after they catch on lol.

They have been paying out on GC's for years. Absolutely no reason to call. Next time ask here and you will get a more accurate answer.
