P.S. Can anyone verify if it's true that creditors are alerted or are scouring to find debtors who have awaken from their slumber?

I don't know about OC's, but I've seen this from JDB's & CA's. They soft your reports every so often, and if they see a Hard from a car or mortgage company, they come out of the woodwork.

The good news if there is any, is that there are ways of dealing with these salamanders.

I wouldn't apply for a mortgage if I had outstanding bad debts still within the SOL.

Sorry if I offended anyone. I do understand that everything is not meant for everyone and thats the chance you take when you post on any social media platform. I applaud everyone in all the success stories Ive read over the years on this site. I read this more than I've read the bible. How many people that are in 700+ club still have an unpaid tax lien ? Probably not many. There are probably more people that are in the 500's that may be? How many people that are in that 700+ club still have an opensky or first premier card? from what I've been reading, not any. But its cool advice that you can say its not the card to have when you dont need it. But, I am willing to bet you that someone in my same situation has one one or is seriously debating on how to move forward. Just recently somebody here with a 700+ fico told me that a charge off was better than paying a debt off that has latenesses attached already and even though when I pay it in full, that it will report "paid as agreed " just let it charge off, really? I spoke to a mortgage loan officer and he says that is not so. Sometimes you just dont know what you are reading unless you know something about the author. I listen to the good and the other stuff too.

In the 500's, you work on cleaning up your reports and adding secured cards. Until you get close to 600 (when you may get a Cap One), there is no chance of other approvals.

As for things like First Premier or Credit One, you DO NOT need them, and if you read all you claim you would know they are just a notch above useless AND take away money you could be adding to a secured card. So it is not a matter of folks in the 700's putting down cards that they left in the dust years ago. It is advising you to NOT waste your money they way some of us did back when.

Cool. Before fingerhut, nothing. Since it reported, increase of 23pts! Opensky finally reported and another 28pts was added. So far those two raggedy cards gained me 50+ points quicker than anything else so far. Has anyone else gained any points from fingerhut or opensky? Lol

That must be what happened to me the past couple of weeks, the COs didn't come from the OC, they're from some law office/CA. Thankfully, WhyChat has been assisting me with them. I am just so thankful to have found CB, IMO there is nothing that can top free advise from people who have been were I am now, and have prevailed. But like OP, in my frustration and eagerness to move forward, I have found myself wanting to read the stories of those who are somewhat where I am but have had recent success. However, I have read numerous times, "credit repair is a marathon, not a sprint." Heck, I wasn't aware that charity care even existed. I have lupus and had no choice but to go to the ER a couple times when I didn't have insurance. Of course I knew that I would incur charges that needed to be paid, but it would have been really helpful had the hospital staff done what they are required to do and offer me an application for assistance. Something so simple would have helped me a long way. I went to the hospital website and after several clicks, what do I find? A link, right there under the financial tab explaining ICTF. Sad thing is, my mother is a nurse and an exceptional one at that, and it never crossed her mind to tell me about it. I realize that the people directly caring for you may not have this at the forefront of their mind, however, the financial staff and registration should be keen on the subject. OT, but hey, my past ignorance could very well help someone else out.

You are veering right past misinformed and are approaching dangerous. Fingerhut and Total Visa are terrible. Why not hit the shopping cart and start adding a ton of store cards you will never use? As with all other things OP has said...CLEARLY YOU DID NOT READ ALL YOU SAID YOU DID. Opening one secured card is not enough to make a difference. Had you opened three really good secured cards, you would have seen the same bump as you did from opening three turds. The issue was not the secured card, it was that you did NOT do what you were told to. So now you pay monthly for your Total Visa. You pay a fortune for junk if you use your Fingerhut. You are making stupid decisions and I hope no one reading your posts takes your advice. Hopefully, someone like you will find this post a year from now and be glad they did not make the terrible choices you are making. Enjoy your crappy credit.

Oh yeah, I had a secured card for 3 months@ $500 before fingerhut ,totalvisa and opensky and gained nothing. Hopefully someone like me will find this post a year from.now and find this useful.

I think it depends on what you already have in your file? From what I understand, diversity is important to make real improvemnts as far as scores go. Maybe you needed store credit to diversify what you already had, while others like me, needed a few CCs(whether it be secured or partially secured, none of mine report secured so maybe that has something to do with it as well?). I haven't had any CCs since 2004 so maybe that's the reason for the major impact they had on my score? This credit thing is so unpredictable, sheesh.

Thats the most sensible topic related response to this post thus far. I'm sure there is algorithmic formula designed to compute those factors. It is complexed. For some, secured cards may be the way and for others maybe not? It really depends on whats in your specific file, I agree cold heartedly.

Ah! So that explains it. I applied to First Premier but something kept nagging at me that I should check some reviews first. Let me tell you, I went running in the other direction. Withdrew my app with the quickness. I then saw some people on myFico forums talking about how Fingerhut helped, I got the same nagging feeling after being approved for $180 Fresh Start, never been back to their site since.

I had to be truthful with myself and realize that it was the same eagerness and ignorance that led me into the very craphole that I am in now. I just had to accept that I got myself here and that no one is going to just approve me for the good stuff but that doesn't mean I have to take the crappy offers either. I racked up a LOT of inquiries listening to poor advise that I thought was good, over 40 smh, mostly auto. Truth is, the advise I say is poor wasn't the problem, my problem was ME ignoring all the other good and accurate advise because I just wanted what I wanted and was impatient.

Op, by no means am I saying you are impatient, so I hope no one gets that misconstrued. I just know someone will come accross this and I hope they don't make any unnecessary mistakes.

Just wondering, where did the idea of store cards being helpful to credit come from? There are a lot of people out there advising others to apply for these cards. If it wasn't for my intuition, I'd probably have ten by now.

I doubt you saw that here on CB.

I wouldn't be surprised if you saw that "advice" on MF.

You would have gotten the same score bumps from 3 or 4 secured cards as you did from adding the trash cards. And as a bonus, you would have saved yourself a bunch of money over the next couple years.

I have a 715 EX with an unpaid $7,500 tax lien (at least how they are reporting it)

Well. .. whats stopping you from paying that unpaid tax lien off with all the money you have been saving lately? I mean, without it on your report, you could be in 800+ range,no? So, you mean to tell me all that you have read so far ,you havent found tge solution to recitify that situation yet? Lol! Genius

Thats not always true. Somebody told me that once my bk was deleted, I would see a credit score increase. I seen nothing, but its gone now and thats all I cared about. This credit thing is fickle imho, and just because you get a increase for adding a new tl, I may add the same tradeline and get a decrease? Edited by fiveyearplan66

I stated this in my previous reply.

Can anyone else provide an answer? It would really help newbies avoid basically paying sub sub prime vultures insane amounts of money just to report that they have a CL. And possibly leading them right back into the craphole they were in initially.

Or maybe I should clarify, not literally what credit forum it came from, but why do people advise this? Was there a time when store cards did help your credit or are they just pulling this stuff out of their behinds? And please do not state the obvious that it it just bad advise, I'd like a real answer, please and thank you in advance.

You don't need store credit. Major CCs alone can build 800+ FICOs.

I can agree with that. Sounds logical. I also believe that the bigger my credit limits are now will later attract , bigger limits than the ones I have now. I plan on increasing my secured card to $2500 which is the max for that card and get fingerhut to increase to its full potential. ..and just use the other two for my L.A. fitness and my Netflix accounts to show activity. Hopefully within the next few months my federal tax lien will be withdrawn. So with what I am working with now, soon I expect to reap some rewards of my own. You guys can continue to comment here, as I am done with this topic. Moving on. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
