A credit union is the last place I would go to for a mortgage.

After getting hassled for years by normal mortgage brokers and crappy servicers, a credit union is the first place I go to for a mortgage.

Have you noticed that CU's seem to hire people of the 'larger persuasion'? And by 'larger persuasion' I mean to say 'big fat people'.

Gonna have to agree to disagree on the credit union hate, then. At least my credit union has bothered to pay my property taxes on time.

I've mostly noticed a complete lack of urgency, which isn't at all memberlicious when you have a closing date on a real estate sales contract and/or an expiring rate lock.

This thread combined with being on a four-hour flight has led me to reading credit union reviews on Credit Karma again.

Does NASA FCU sound memberlicious?

"If you are finally Approved managed to live through the wait, you'll need to provide a ridiculous amount of documents. You'll need to fax, yes fax, as they do not accept digital documents, your Paystubs, W2's, Proof of Address, Proof of Citizenship, References, SSN card, DL, One drop of blood, and one fresh egg from a dragon."

Faxes must simply just die, I hold hostility for any one who still insists you do business with them via fax. Even Amex, had to fax or mail them stuff for annual fee waivers. Only options.

So amex=Credit Unions

I'd rather be able to fax something than snail mail like I had to do with escrow on last deal. I can handle sending a fax from an online service, can't be bothered to go down to the Post Office yo!

That said CU's are all over the map when it comes to mortgage underwriting; not like big box banks are any better but if we're talking standard simple Agency mortgage, correspondence lender like Shane is usually the way to go in my estimation.

That said if a CU had an interesting refinance option, like Penfed's 15/15 ARM, I'd try it, but purchase transaction, no thanks. Mortgage industry sort of sucks for purchases these days, too much feeding at the refinance trough for the last half decade.

Trashing credit unions as a whole is silly. Mine was great during my refinance, they have the ability to make lots of exceptions to help out someone with an imperfect credit history.

While they are super slow like CV has said, NASA does now have a document uploading capability on their website. Used it in April to send in docs.

Maybe it's just the five or six I've had to fire during the origination process. Maybe the others don't have issues with ambition or urgency.

The fresh ones don't smell.
