I have 2 kids one is 16 other is 5. I received the Anthem letter last year on the 16 yo, but never really followed through with it. Do any of you or can you sign up kids for for credit karma, credit shame etc. for a free monitoring service. The 16's father has been out of the picture his whole life. I've raised him ever since he was two. I also had the thought of checking for him because he has a potential for identity theft from his paternal Father. Any recommendations?

They would first have to have a credit file in order to be signed up with CK and any other monitoring service, if there is no file you wont be to sign them up.

There should not be a file on either. I was just curious in case someone ever did try to steal their identity.

Order their reports directly from the CRAs to confirm.

There's no identity to steal when they have no credit.

A growing subset of identity theft is government identity theft or tax fraud. Thieves will try to use a stolen Social Security number to claim a child who is not theirs on their tax return. They will then file for the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits to garner a higher tax refund. Any problems you can contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at (800) 908-4490 and visit irs.gov/identitytheft.
