Big Bear
No luv anymore for me from Discover...I am at 40K limit for the last 8 months on the Discoverit card, tried the request a few time and each time getting the "not enough experience with your current credit limit" explanation. I have used an average of about 2500 a month and don't want to use it too much. Is there a way to get over the hump - perhaps a BT if the fee is less? I want at least one card to hit 50k in 2017 and this is the closest one. Do you have other cards that earn more than 1% rewards? Use is by no means a requirement to obtain the CLIs you're seeking. trachkids
So it's been no luck since something like October '16... I charged $2 last month as mentioned here. The $0 statement just cut so I pushed the button... Two day message. Could this finally be the opportunity to hit 50k? Time will tell... Good luck BB

They seem to be be, somewhat, unpredictable in their criteria for granting CLIs. Good luck on getting your $50k card though

A list of cards to apply for is easy. But within what Group? As far as I know, CreditBoards doesn't promote any one card. Some members may tout the advantages of this card or that, and some eagerly point out the shortcomings of one card or another. But, what cards you apply for will depend on what strategy you have, what your credit score is, etc. Lots of factors. Ideally, you'll want to start with your credit scores - your Fico 8 credit scores - to see which type of card might suit you best. I would start with a Google search for Capital One pre-qualify and perhaps the mega banks - Chase, Citi, BOA - but I wouldn't go near Wells Fargo. You may actually have already applied for that card and not realize it.

I have cap1 quick silver at 1.5% rewards, I had combined my old venture card with this to get total CL to 42k. I haven't received any CLI with cap1 in ages, gave up on them. Does discover allow combining cards? That might be an option to bump my CL to 50K if I apply for another of their cards and merge it end of the year. So you're spending at least $1000 a month on 1% rewards that you could be getting another 0.5%...for the sake of trying to get a CLI? A second Discover card is certainly not the answer to help with this 'well has gone dry' scenario. Do you have a thread on your profile on here (yet)? Perhaps you can get much better advice there than inside this thread. Edited August 9, 2017 by Big Bear
racoon786
I do use the 5% categories a lot on this card but yeah, probably not worth using it as much if usage is not a big factor in getting CLI bumps. Profile thread? I have to look into that, first I am hearing about it. Thanks.

Profile thread? I have to look into that, first I am hearing about it. Thanks. My card went from ~18k to 49.5k with about $100 in use. It's not needed...or at least wasn't. By profile thread I mean a thread that you've created. It may be advisable for you to do so if you are seeking advice on further card additions (i.e. I'm noting no Chase in your signature, and the PenFed has room to grow, etc)
racoon786
Ok, got it. Chase freedom at 11k and they don't do auto CLI's or have a luv button, had it for more than 10 years and they suck at increasing CLs. Penfed, rare usage since I don't like their rewards (points) and I haven't tried a CLI with them yet, not sure if it is inquiry free. PenFed doesn't really need much use. Quarterly offers are the way to go (they will certainly pull a hard if you request). On topic...I'm still pending on the request...so somehow still have a slight amount of hope.
Zalc
Maybe it's both? I've had long stretches with no increases, and multiple increases close together after hitting the limit. Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk FWIW, I was able to get to 49.5k with extremely minimal spending. Likely the last +25k had maybe $40 in spend pushed through the card. Granted, this was before the love stopped. So close, yet so far... And the more your limit, the harder it is to bump into it. For posterity: see Here. Can't predict them at all. I know that there are multiple contradictory DPs to my experience. Yet, After getting shot down by them for the past few months, I decided to try and hit my CL again and see what happens. I got very close to the limit ($14k), and paid it in full. Hit the LUV button the next day, and was denied. 1 day later I get an email saying the my limit was increased to $18k. I guess this is what I will continue doing, so long as it works for me.
mikenola
How long after getting a card from discover can I request a CLI? Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk As long as you get the SP language, you can request anytime. First increases are usually at 4 months, IIRC. You could try at 31, 61, and 91 days... if you like. Kat, would you explain what you mean by "get the SP language..." I was just approved for 6k as intial CL yesterday. I cannot set up my account on line unitl I get the card so I cannot, yet, see what and where SP language might apply. none of my other cards (NFCU, CSP, CITI, Costco, Cap1, USAA, BCE, etc) has a "try an sp to get an increase" type language. Also is there some thread in these almost 300 posts that shows a CLI strategy for Discover? minimum time periods /statement cuts, etc.? thanks Mike
FoxSamual
Three statement cycles between approvals for me. There was one unsolicited CLI in there which did NOT reset the three month clock: 09/16: $1,500 (opening CL) 12/16: $2,300 (luv button) 03/17: $3,000 (luv button) 06/17: $3,500 (unsolicited) 07/17: $4,500 (luv button) Every request I've submitted earlier than the third statement after an approval was rejected with the insufficient experience message. Forgot to request in June, which would've been the third statement, got the unsolicited one, then pulled another one from luv button. May be worth sitting tight to see if you get a unsolicited CLI at 90 days, then wait another cycle to request, as a way of maximizing your gain. FWIW, I've kept it close to maxed out, running out the clock on the 0% purchases, will PIF when that expires. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Edited August 21, 2017 by FoxSamual

FoxSamual
So you have been carrying a maxed out balance and been receiving CLI's? Basically. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it though. Overall utilization is around 30% so my score is still good. Only carrying the Discover balance to earn bank on the money while the 0% intro rate lasts.
FoxSamual
FWIW, just tried, because my new statement cut, and 7-10 day message. It's almost certainly gonna be "insufficient experience." Only consistent thing for me is the three statement "rule." Dollars to donuts says a request in October will be approved. In fact, I will likely stop trying outside of these parameters; not sure I like having all the rejections on my "permanent record" with them. Satmanshorty
My last increase was 2-12-17. I've tried at least once a week since May, and only got not enough experience letter. Tried again last Friday and it gave $500. I canceled increase process, and tried again Saturday and it showed $1000. Canceled and tried again today and still $1000. I took the $1000. Total is $13000 now.
