M$ speed bumps

Someone on FT mentioned that a Simon employee told them 250s were going to supplant the 500s there too.

Crap!!!

I'm going to my local Simon in about 12 hours. I'll ask the friendly ladies there if they've heard anything like this.

2% acquisition cost would make this closed-loop CC-VGC-MO-Bank-CC game not worth playing for non-categorized spend. :blush2:

Bought 20 cards today @ my local Simon.

I asked this question and was told this only applies to 5 Backs, (max $200 load each).

That's good to hear.

There do seem to be fewer places restocking the 'to 500' variables.

Though I haven't been buying them at Simon they seemed like the one that would keep selling until the end and back again. Maybe because the cashiers all seem to know what you are doing.

What's wrong in buying them from simon.com...?

CC's won't recognize that as the appropriate spend category?

As long as they keep selling them either will work just fine. There is no category for either so that's not an issue. the advantage to buying them in person rather than online would be no shipping delay and faster conversion back to cash.

I was reconciling my accounts the other day and I thought I seemed to be a bit short over all.

Found 3 MOs in my wallet today.

Better misplaced than lost. But it highlights a need to tighten up your process and/or your record keeping

Yep. I realized that I'm not recording the existence of the GC or the MO in the process. I often hold them for a bit to save on the number of trips to the bank.

Same here (on the holding part). I pair GC packaging to MO stub, and hold both until the MO is deposited. So any missed GC's or MO's stand out immediately

When I get a batch of GCs the receipt for them goes into one of the GC packages and those packages stay in a limbo position until the MO(s) gets made. then the MO receipts go into the same packaging as the GC receipt and each GC goes back into one of the GC packages once it is drained (though not necessarily the packaging it came from) Then the packaging and the receipts go into a rubber banded batch. Once the batch hits 20 it goes into the box. So I should be able to assemble any specific record if needed, though it may take a little sorting.

Where are you buying MOs using GCs? USPS and Walmarts here don't take GCs for MOs.

Wallyworld. I occasionally get asked if the card has my name on it (when it's a newbie at the counter). When I buy VGC's online, I take the extra step to have my name put on them for just this reason. Lacking that, you can play the 3-card Monte game, flashing your real debit card, and then swiping a GC. But this gets hard to explain when you're doing multiple swipes.

Winn Dixie... If that's in your neighborhood, it's a good place to buy $500 bucks visa gift cards. (sunrise and meta).

I can buy OneVanilla VGCs (non reloadable) from CVS, Walgreens, Sam’s Club but cannot buy MOs using GCs. If I buy GCs with name I would not get 5% category reward.

I have read on this thread and elsewhere and vanilla VGCs are not useful anymore. It might be a good idea to scan this thread for the most recent trends in operating manufactured spend.

Here in Florida I found sunrise bank visa debit gift cards to work very well with MOs. I used that for utility bills and rental payments for the first time. Only glitch is that you'll face a little delay while the cashier calls the manager on duty if you buy the $500 gift card at winn dixie. The manager has to authorize large amounts. But other than that, all downhill.

I was also able to transfer some bucks from the gift card to my Bluebird at Walmart.

What GC's can you buy at Walmart? Was told cash only a few weeks ago.

My local walmart doesn't carry anything above $200.

I look for GC's with 'Sunrise' or 'Metabank' as issuers.

Also, to prevent stares, I buy GC's along with other grocery.

If a cashier looks suspicious or even just inquisitive, I tell them "I get frequent flyer points for using my credit card. So I use my credit card to buy the VGC's, and then I use the VGS's to pay my rent and utilities. By the end of year, I should have enough points for a trip to Hawaii". It gives them a reason they can understand, and now you're not "that shady guy who buys gift cards for more than my whole month's paycheck".

-- And I also make a point of mixing my VGC purchase with some other items, so that my CC isn't a long string of $1011.90 purchases

So, this is my new study topic for the next few weeks, because I want to read up and learn this well enough to not do screwups. Is there a general guide, as this and the current m$ info are about the only 'major' threads on it. And googling gives lots of "mostly outdated" information from my findings thus far. Gods of m$, what sort of sacrifices do you prefer for guidance rituals? As long as it's not the adorable goats. ;)
