The weird part is... for all the crap on Discover... two stories.

For me, I applied with some baddies, and they gave me a $1k limit, my second lowest next to a Cap 1 GM card. (HSBC), the rest are $5k or so average, with high end at $15k.

For my wife... Discover gave her her highest limit at the time when she applied, beating Amex, at $11k, when her scores were the same as mine. Right now her highest is Amex @ $21k, so will see about CLI on Discover. She has no issues with them.

Yrs, their limits are all over the place.

Really though, what's the value of a 1% cash back card with some 5% capped quarterly categories?

Well, I think there is more to it than that...

an American call center 24-7,

I can request to be sent to a US supervisor for any issuer

friendly reps

?

free Fico,

Lots of those

decent promos

Lots of those

they waive fees, will not hit you with penalty apr on first lates

I dont plan on missing payments

More to it than just the 1%, and for a lot... 1% is better than 0%

And not as good as 1UR, 1 MR, 1TY, 1 mile, 2% etc.

Did I say it was the best card? No.... and obviously you don't value it. That is ok.

Cash back is cash back. Most folks do not get 1 cent per point redemptions anyway so for people who do not have a 1.5% or 2% card for all, this is a good all around card. How many folks that you know actually bother to go through the rewards on their cards and know exactly what to use with each? Outside of forums, very very few.

Personally for us, the 5% on restaurants is higher than we can get anywhere else, and for my business, where we do a lot of dining, this is free cash.

Even though my wife and I know perfectly well that all gas, drugs and groceries go on our 5% blue cash card, and everything else on the 2.2% arrival, I still see her swiping other cards too.

For people who do not want to worry about carrying the "right" card for the purchase, the Discover is a decent every day card and that resonates with a lot of people and a lot of my clients.

Even though I personally use mostly Amex, for business and personal, a number of places I visit do not take Amex, so other cards can work.

... and finally, who ever plans on missing a payment? It is nice to know it is there. .... lastly, at least for my wife, Discover get her the lowest APR on a rewards card, until Citi dropped her rate to 2.9% or something on a card she did not use. Not bad for a no annual fee rewards card.

Most people are able to get many times more than 1 cent per point on travel redemption.

So you requested a cli to a large amount and they wanted proof of your income?

God forbid a bank actually wants some proof of your claims before loaning you thousands of dollars without any collateral.

If you indeed had the income that you claimed, why is it an issue?

Obviously you know zilch about what data AmEx gets from your Return Transcript.

1. American call center: Who cares? Who calls them every day?

2. Friendly reps: Meet Chase, USAA, Navy, B of A and just about every other bank CSR that I have spoken with. Dude, it's a three minute phone call and not your Rent-A-Date.

3. Free TU FICO: Dime a dozen.

4. Waive fees: Who cares?

5. 1%: Boring. More than boring.

You forgot to mention limits lower than most other issuers. ;)

I wonder what kind of limit they would give me.

I've had a preapproval forever.

They will give you 1K and retract the promotional offers :P

Yep, that too!

When I apped for it, I did it for the 18 month 0% BT which I needed at the time. They HP'd twice and then told me I wasn't eligible for the 18 mo, but could give me 6. On a $1000 CL.

I  'd.

The woman then asked me if I still wanted the card. I should have taken the hint - and I really do believe she was hinting that I should reject it at that point. But I figured I had already taken the 2 HP's, so I accepted but did not BT. It's been basically SD, with a few tiny transactions. This past month I put around $3.50 on it, but right at due date, so I pushed about $2.00 at it (I couldn't remember what I owed at the time) and they covered the remainder, which is posted as Personal Income. I think I'll do that every month!

I think CV takes them for a $1.50 amazon gift card every month.

It's like they are paying you an AF for the privilege of being in your house. :)

Don't forget the often forgotten perk of Cash Over

https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/member-benefits/cash-over-purchases.html

But seriously, They recently auto-CLI'd me from $9k to $12,500. So I've broken the $10k ceiling.

I only use the card to max out the 5% bonus cats and SD, so whatever.

Oh, and I have never once been snaked on my rewards.

I get a lame sadistic pleasure out of this, just like floating a balance with Capital One through a free BT.

It's all driven by contempt and spite. :D

I don't think it's a bad thing to keep a Discover IT around - even if you don't use it much. There's the 5% categories and no AF. The only reason I can see closing one is if your limit is a complete joke (Ie, you're stuck at $500 CL when you have $25K+ cards).

Then again, maybe my experience is different since they started me at $6800.

Why does everyone rip Discover on the Credit Limits. I have sub 700 scores and they gave me over 10k starting limit.

$10k is something to brag about? My condolences.

Oh I know, sheeze how cheap they are, I mean what are the averages for a guy who has sub 700 scores, where his current highest cl is just a little north of 4k. 20k, 30k?

Just seems like many but not all of you had your little feelings hurt at one time or another and like to paint this horrible picture of Discover. But many read your posts and think "What are they talking about?"

As Kobe used to tell Pau all the time. "Put you big boy paints on and get over it"

People can be so arrogant. There are some of us that are still working on being perfect like the rest of you... a $10k limit is nothing to sneeze at. I don't understand why some people's need to act like elitist snobs like $10k is chump change. It's not.

$10K is a very respectable limit.

BW has said that he has MANY cards with CLs below $10K.

Agreed. A $10K limit really is nothing to sneeze at. I was over the moon at my first $10K limit recently.

Also, when you're rebuilding you have to start SOMEWHERE - I started with $300 CL Orchard and Cap 1 cards and got REJECTED by Discover for an unsecured card for years.

It's ok, poto is just very excited to share his feelings, don't let his ego come off as rudeness.

I have hundreds of thousands of miles between different carriers simply because I can't get a redemption worth it more than 1 cent. Airfare from the north east is just stupid cheap thanks to competition. Unless you do a travel award, you are not going to get more than 1 cent a mile , unless you sell the points and risk your account.

For someone that either has travel paid or earns miles quite easily, it does not beat actual cash in the account.

We have used discovers 5% quite often and it ended up being thousands of dollars sitting right now in investment accounts.

... But obviously you know better. :)

Hasn't the it only been out a couple years?

The 5% categories are only good for $300 per year.

depends...

factoring in that the cash back is hit and miss as far as being credited properly

$30,000=$300 Cash back

Mere than one card, also using their portal, I meant cash back from them in general.

The only card we used for restaurant, everything else is on Arrival and the old Blue Cash.

Also did A Lot of MS on the cards. Lol. So in that regard, during the heydays any available credit was great credit when you are cycling money. :) but obviously this is not for this forum, and reserved for flyertalk and private ms forums.
