I called Bank of America recently with some auto loan questions, and they were really helpful. Five minutes after I hung up I got a call back from the person to whom I spoke. These are not script-reading CSRs.

 

"Mr. Tater, I don't know if this option is worth your consideration, but after we talked I noticed that one of your credit cards with us has a $55,000 limit and almost no balance. If you wanted to do a cash advance on this card to pay for the car, while there would be a 3% cash advance fee, we could waive any interest charges for 18 months. This may or may not be appealing to you, but I wanted to present it as an option."

 

Somehow I doubt that ELFCU has CSRs doing callbacks like this.

I get that (not 75k, but you know), and the ability to email the CEO (who writes back personally in 5-10 minutes) from my CU.

A few month back Pen Fed gave me 0% for 36 months on a auto loan. No fees at all! Purchased a Benz through Pen Fed buying service and got 12,000 off sticker price. Bet those scum bags at that big box bank never ran a promotion like that. Not even after taking billions from widows and orphans with their mortgage scam funded by tax payers!

Credit Unions are not for profit and return their profits to their members. I have been a member at Pen Fed for a very long time. From time to time they run promotions even better than the zero percent for 36 months! I once got 5% CD rate for 5 years when the market rates were in the sub 2% range for that kind of term. Your Bank sends their profits to their stockholders and Executive Management Team. BofA will never run a promotion that good because if they did Wall Street would be all over them. Don't get me wrong - Banks have a place - it just isn't for most everyday middle class transactions!

I think it depends on the bank and even then, everyone has different experiences. I've had issues with Alliant freezing my accounts(at least five times) and not processing an application for an automobile loan but had no issues with banks doing such things. I made a thread a couple of months back about Eli Lily Federal Credit Union closing my membership simply because I had a lot of new credit card accounts. They told me they had to "protect" their members from people like me and my actions were concerning. US Bank closed my personal cards(too many inquiries) but left my business cards and deposit accounts open, which makes sense.

 

Credit unions give back to members, but they still obviously care about customers that have more money with them since they give them back more. Most credit unions are not national or even regional. Yes they do have shared branches, but that isn't the same as a real branch. Without the big banks, credit unions wouldn't get very far as they'd have no where to get their money from. Imagine that all of the big banks went away tomorrow and took their money with them. I doubt credit unions would be enough to sustain everyone.

Don't take this wrong but I appreciate people like you. I also have plenty invested both in retirement accounts and in non retirement accounts. I have an investment team and I have a private banker at US Bank Wealth Management and they treat me just as well as BofA private banking treats you. The difference between me and you is I do not borrow from US Bank. I only borrow if the rate is 0 percent or if I can reasonably expect to earn significantly more than the rate I have to pay. Please keep padding the big banks pockets! In the mean time the best advise I could people on this site is that generally a credit union will have better rates and give more personalized service.
