Well that was a waste of time, here is the reply from Amex:

Dear Mr. X,

Thank you for your message to the Executive Office. After review, I have been asked to respond to you and I welcome this opportunity to be of assistance.

We appreciate your interest in obtaining a new American Express Account. During the application process, our New Accounts Division must follow certain guidelines to determine eligibility for various Card products. They will review credit bureau information, personal resources and the status of the applicant’s current/former American Express Account. If any of the above information reflects unfavorably, an application will be declined.

For additional information on how to obtain an American Express Card account, I would recommend that you contact 800-700-7619.

Mr. X, we appreciate your understanding and thank you for contacting American Express.

Sincerely,
Tricia-Ann Polack
American Express Executive Customer Care

Calling the 800 # does not good as my SS # is blacklisted so it never makes it to a credit review process. Oh well, certainly not the end of the world.

I burned Amex in my BK for $500.00. Applied just to see if I am BL'd, and indeed I am, but I have done the app twice and in both occasions they suggested that I get the bluebird card.

You might get an offer for the Oasis program. You never know.

Of course that would mean paying off the old accounts.

Don't want them that bad, lol!

Joe, not surprised by your AMEX rejection letter, they are strictly pay to play if you ever included them in BK. So how much are we talking here?

Maybe have the wife get a card and try to add you as an AU?

For an AU add of someone who IIB Amex, I think it takes at least 8 years.

If you IIB Amex, they don't allow you to get another card OR be an AU. Period. Some people slip through the cracks, but that is the policy. Doesn't matter how long ago the IIB was.

NYRfann - I did the same thing around a year ago. Got the same responses. Sent letters, made several calls, talked to several people, denied for card or AU.

So perhaps the way around is to get a corporate card guaranteed by the company with the account? This is one way I may differ from others, perhaps someone else could test this hypothesis?

Sometimes it will work. Not sure why and not sure how, but some companies can make it work.

You have to get the company of the corporate card to guarantee your card and then you get one.

Don't feel bad. I will be forever on their BL as well.

Burned them for over $5K in my BK and it's certainly not worth it to pay to get back in with them.

Not sure if it's true, but one of their underwriters told me that if the amount is less than $10K, you won't be blacklisted forever.

Well, that's some consolation.

I'll try back in 10 years and let everyone now….LOL.

I'm pretty sure mine was for around $20K in 1994.

I don't understand why they made an exception for me, I know they have record of it still because they have mentioned it during phone calls after I got an AU account.

I'll probably test these waters in the next year or so. I had an Amex corporate, as well as a business platinum. Had them for years and years with no problems. My company started having financial trouble, & I was late on one or two payments. They took both cards away, and gave me an Optima. I had the Optima for a few months, when they closed it for no apparent reason. It still had about a thousand dollars left to be paid, that was in 2008. I figure I'll try them in a year or two when my reports are better suited for Amex.

What if they were included in a chapter 13 and was paid back, will they still BL and/or not approve for new?

If they suffered no loss, you should be ok.

That is not 100% true..there are people here who have gotten back after BK. Generally speaking if it was less than 10K you've got a shot, although success rates aren't great. Success rates are much lower approaching nil if the amount is over 10K.

Mine was around 12k about 12 years ago and no luck. Have even written letters to the top to try to get just an AU and was denied.
