Just called the Chase recon line regarding my Sapphire Preferred application.

Called up and spoke to a really nice gentleman for about 15 minutes. I had a security freeze on Experian and I gave him the pin to lift that.

He asked me a few questions about my BK in 2010. He asked about my mortgage and income. Then put me on hold for about five minutes and came back saying that he had to send it up the ladder for further review because of the BK. He said in 7-10 business days I would either get my card in the mail or an explanation for the decline.

I asked him what his thoughts were and he said he was satisfied and he had been doing it for a long time and he had was good at reading credit... but yet it was forwarded for further review.

Anybody get this message before? I really need to stop applying for cards!

Related question -- if you're shooting for a card that requires "excellent credit" like the CSP, and the rep on the phone is not sounding hopeful about approval, would it be possible to switch boats midstream? Switch the application to a "consolation prize" cc that still has decent benefits?

What if Lethargic would have read the tea leaves, and determined it was pretty unlikely the CSP would be approved. But, had he/she done a bit of homework ahead of time and had a backup card in mind, would the phone rep be able to handle a request like "Hey, it sounds like it may not go through. Do you think we could just change the application to a _____ Card instead?" (Like, Freedom, United, Amtrak, something that may have less stringent underwriting standards).

Otherwise, if the applicant waits for the letter in the mail, presumably Chase would need to do another Experian hard pull before filling out an application for the consolation prize card.

Or, a variation, would be to finish the CSP application, then call in again and apply for the lower card on the same day, and have two applications in the system at once.

creditcards.com lists the "Freedom" as only requiring "fair credit". http://www.creditcards.com/fair-credit.php Bob Wang had some charts on this a while back showing approvals by credit score by card by issuer, but I haven't been able to find them since.

Just curious.

Any update to this or anyone else experience this?

I just called for recon on a 7-10 notice for Freedom. Had a C/O they inherited over 7 years ago.

Spent over 20 minutes on the phone with him. At the end, he said my history looks great after the 2007 catastrophe but he needs to send my app up to the senior UW.

Said I can call back in 48-72 hours or wait for news by mail.

I wasn't sure if this was a blow off or I should still be hopeful.
