My dear ol' dad was in the Sea Bees during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He felt like a target in the submarine before embarking on land to build bridges.

Admittedly he said he never was in gun fire. He was older when he joined and taught the young men. He said safety was his biggest concern with some young guys wheeling around their guns and possibly showing off. Not being careful handling a weapon.

That's generally the case.  The younger troops sometimes think with the wrong head.

Then when his service ended he returned home and managed a cotton gin. A worker showed up drunk and my dad read him the riot act about the dangers working in the gin. He fired the guy and that same guy went to work at another cotton gin and got sliced up.
