Chase closed my account "reputation risk"

Hello all,

 

I have utilized and received immense help fixing my credit post-bankruptcy from this forum. Although I never posted, for fear of flames, in the matter of a year I went from the low 500's to 700. As I continued working on my credit, I opened several accounts.

 

Fast forward, I have a 760-770 high limits on 15 cards (11 now) and 2% UTL.

 

The other day I logged on to pay my chase Marriott and Ink ( no balance on my Hyatt or Amtrak cards)and above the account info, A message read "this account has been closed etc." I sent a secure message inquiring as to why. I was told to either call the number on the back of the card or wait for a letter in the mail. I called and the representative informed me that I would have to wait on the letter. I thought thus odd because I had no inquiries, PIF, high FICO and low UTL.

 

I received the letter Friday stating that "continuing the relationship creates possible reputational risk". This time it had a phone number to "Elgin, IL". I phoned and was informed because I had a 11 year old felony, it wasn't serious and I received probation. Non violent, not financial, it had to do with "green Mary Jane".

 

They explained they had uncovered this with a routing audit in there systems and it came up. I explained to her this was extremely old and the offense is now legal in several states. She reiterated that chase can close the accounts at will.

 

Aside from what I've read is there anyway to reverse this decision? I have never posted but this really upsets me, especially if I am now blacklisted. Sorry for a rant post very disappointed that something so long ago is now playing a role in my financial affairs.

 

Any advice would be appreciated. I don't know how to post a picture but I have the letter they sent.

I wonder how many people who have a felony record that now have good credit and prime cards?

 

You should seriously look at getting the record expunged.

 

Not sure what could be done to rectify your situation.

There have been others reporting similar experiences with Chase. There is nothing you can do about Chase but you will only be blacklisted with Chase and the Chase action shouldn't be visible to any others.

Someone posted about having their account closed before like this. I doubt you will be able to get the account back. And honestly, why would you want to. I want to know what a routing audit is, if anyone cares to explain.

As @Cashnocredit mention there have been folks that had a similar situation. I think this is so wrong. I dont think you will be blacklisted, but I would do the following ASAP:

 

Get your record expunged

Contact Chase EO and appeal. Also write them if you are verbally denied.

Contact the CFPB and file a complaint. They may not be able to help but it will be on record.

This was thoroughly discussed the last time this happened.

 

They seem to have people doing Google searches and other searches for felons and correlating them with their account database and closing otherwise good accounts if you're a felon no matter the conviction.

My very best friend that I grew up with got into some trouble while he was in the army. He ended up serving about 7 years for an arm robbery charge. When he got out of prison I was right there to pick him up, the second thing I said to him after I hugged him and said that I was glad that he was free was, we have to get you a job and to finish your degree so that you can get a job and be productive.

 

Fast forward 20 years he went on to get his BS degree and he landed a great job. Right after he graduated from college he was able to get his record expunged and to top it off he went back and apologized to the guy and paid him for the money and things he stole from him.

 

I know that was a bit off topic but the point is you should be able to get that expunged and get your rights back.

BTW, they did this recently with people in the porn industry, not just the performers. It was a huge sweep in LA.

 

This stinks and is so stupid. Chase hates me ever since I deposited a fraudulent certified check that I had them check out before I deposited it because I thought it was an odd source for the payment. Then they charged me for depositing a bad check and then closed my account. I had been with them for over 20 years, same address, major lines of credit.

Maybe it wasn't the conviction rather than current, albeit honest & legitimate, employment? Run a medical marijuana shop? Head shop? Tea Bagger?

 

If it is only the conviction, this is sooooooo wrong what Chase did.

Though it is legal in a couple states. Marijuana is still considered illegal on a federal level. A lot of businesses are considering marijuana illegal regardless of which state you are in.

 

Try to have unwanted information about yourself removed from the internet if you can as well. Even prospective employers would do this.

Others have posted similar incidents. Unfortunately Chase isn't going to budge. Fortunately there are a thousand other banks out there for you to choose from. I wonder how many Chase executives wouldn't qualify for a Chase account if they picked through their entire lives. I would find it hard to believe that none of them have smoked pot. As far as who has driven banks into the ground, I think we know.

They won't stop until they start getting negative press about it.

In many states -- and currently according to the EEOC -- you cannot refuse to hire someone convicted of a crime absent a demonstrated business necessity. Yet somehow you can refuse an ex-felon a savings account? Nah.

 

There is more here than meets the eye. Much more.
