CNBC has a good video explaining the basic way SS uses your income history to determine how big your CC check will be. While not covering a lot of ancillary things like effect of retirement age, survivor's benefits and  such, it's a great baseline for understanding how it works.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/12/how-much-the-average-american-will-get-from-social-security.html

You can also go to the SS website to see your wage history, expected benefit, etc.  It will also show you the impact of taking SS when first eligible (62), full retirement age (66-67 for most) and waiting until you're 70.  If you are in good health and can afford to do so, waiting until 70 is the best option.

Get those numbers first so you can see the effects on your particular situation.

Good health doesn't mean squat. Let's say, you start taking SS at 62 and draw $1k each monthl. At age 69, you would have collected ~$84k (not including COL increases). If you planned on waiting until 70 and croaked at 69 (there's lots of ways to croak), you wouldn't receive one dime. That's my logic anyway :D

ETA - I believe the break even amount is around age 78/79, so there's that.

By that logic I shouldn't save anything because I could die tomorrow...

Good health and your life expectancy are the basis for determining if it makes financial sense to delay drawing SS.  If you have a bunch of chronic conditions that are known to shorten life expectancy then you are likely better off drawing ASAP vs. if you are in good health you would likely have a longer life expectancy and therefore it would make sense to delay.  It is a math equation and there is a break even point, you figure out what that age is and then ask yourself whether or not you're likely (not assured) to live that long.

I think "abundance of caution" was already on my list.  Use that phrase and you're dead to me.

Now I'm putting "social distancing" on the same list.  Honestly, just tell people to stay the @$%^ away from each other.  It's more direct and honest.

AGREE 100%.  If you are close enough that I can put my foot up your ass, you're too effing close and get the hell away from me.  That should be the allowed test of social distancing.  Anyone within kicking distance is fair game to be kicked.  Men, women, kids, old people, I don't care.  If you are unable to stay away then stay home.

There's a Chuck Norris joke somewhere in here.

100% of the time the cleaning people put the trash can on the wrong side of the toilet.

And they always place the toaster so the long side is parallel to the backsplash, and not perpendicular as it should be.

It should be obvious from the location of the buttons that operate the toaster which way the device needs to face for convenient operation.

Mom has a crew that does stuff like that...almost makes me wonder if they deliberate move stuff around in an effort to make you believe they really did something.

Also run into that sort of thing in a hotel room...if I am only there for two days, not as big a deal...but when I am there for a week, I have things WHERE I WANT THEM.  Leave them in place...

Grrrrr!!!!

I think this story is buried earlier in the thread, but at some point "wash the sheets in the master bedroom" dropped off their task list without my input.

It took a few cycles before I figured out that the lack of freshness wasn't because they didn't like using dryer sheets (my initial assumption).

It could have been months.

Yes, please schedule another meeting for today. Having 10 hours of meetings in an 8 hour period isn't enough. Especially when trying to coordinate between 3 time zones.

One of the nice things about working remotely in two different times zones with no predictable pattern is that no one ever knows where I am.

They're all trained to only schedule things with me during times that could work in either of my time zones.  This has uncomplicated my calendar dramatically.

Is it to much to ask people living in the first world to shower at least once a day?

And can we make it a felony to have a neck beard? Same goes for those that can't grow a reasonable amount of facial hair to begin with. You know the type......they have about 300 unruly hairs scattered around their face.

I just noticed a "trending" salon or slate article about how showering daily is bad, and I hate seeing those articles. I sincerely do not mean to be judgmental but how else do you signal "wake up" to your whole body?!
