Words, Phrases and Other Stuff that Annoys Me

It's disgusting how sloppy people dress at "professional" places. A professional office environment is no place for jeans, flip flops, those short high water pants that middle aged women wear, etc. If you're going to dress like a bum, you shouldn't be too surprised when people treat you like one. What happened to the days when people actually wore business clothes at a business?

I'm retired. I started working as a "professional" electronics engineer in 1971. What's a suit? Worked 30+ years w/o one. I didn't even wear a tie when I went in for the interview after graduation. It was my only job interview and I didn't own a tie, was ambivalent about working in Calif., and didn't really expect to be hired. I was wrong. They offered me a job the next day. Turned out to be an excellent place to work where I learned a lot, contributed a lot, and it gave me the background to ultimately start my own business. It was, though, pure luck as I had no idea what I was doing right out of school.

Now if I'd interviewed at Big Blue......

Yet, when you go to doctors, lawyers, accountants, or anyone that deals with the public they all are dressed in, well, uniforms of the trade. I believe this is because the attire is symbolic of quality. Most members of the public have no idea how to tell if a lawyer, doctor, or other professional is competent. An expensive suit is a sort of a "trust me" badge. Over the years that sort of thing came to mean less and less to me. Anyone can put on a suit. The better the suit the harder the sell and the more I want to walk.

Interesting.................I just had this same conversation with a co-worker of mine. I asked him how people would react if I worked in the front office. I would be wearing a T-Shirt and jean shorts almost every day.

Engineers are a different breed, and so is CA. One of my best buddies is an engineer and I'm pretty sure his entire wardrobe now has company logos on it. If I'm hiring a hiring a professional, it'd be great if they didn't look Walmart class.

Oddly enough, since my uncle became a judge who wears a robe all the time, when he's not working, you're lucky if he's wearing pants.

I barely feel comfortable wearing a basic T-Shirt in public anymore. Usually it's a polo or something. I'm not 22 anymore, I feel it's time to dress like an adult if I can't act like one.

Well, engineers aren't known for sartorial skills, or social ones for that matter. Another odd thing about engineers is that I found degrees were close to worthless when evaluating them to hire. I'm not really sure why and was somewhat surprised at it. A lot of larger companies and almost all defense companies would not hire non-degreed engineers. Perhaps that left more non-degreed but good engineers for us.

We can certainly be a strange bunch.

Hampton Inn in Milwaukee gave me a room with no A/C. When I checked out the manager said she would issue me a voucher for a free night. That was on July 4th........I've called them about 5 times already..........I'm wondering if I go the BBB route if Hilton will throw me another free night for bad customer service.

Use Trip Advisor to write a review and describe your experience with that hotel.

I did that with Choice Hotels after staying in one near Austin, TX and the hotel had no hot water. The desk clerk didn't seem concerned. I wrote a scathing review on Trip Advisor and haven't stayed at Choice ever since.
