I recently received a letter from First Nation Collection Bureau, Inc. out of Sparks, Nevada. The debt is listed as originally an AT&T account. This debt very well could be legitimate, but I honestly have no idea because the last time I held an AT&T account was 8-9 years ago. The letter contained so little information I am having a hard time determining if this was even legitimate. I have checked all 3 of my credit reports and there is nothing to reflect this collection. I am just looking for some general advice how to handle a situation like this. Thanks!

Assuming it is your old account:

Is there a notice on the letter that they will not sue you due to it being past the statute of limitations?

When was the last payment made? When was the first delinquency on the acct that led to it being charged off?

The letter does not say anything about suing or not suing. Just that I have 30 days to dispute the validity of the debt, if I don't they assume the debt is valid. Says if I dispute it, they will obtain verification of the debt and provide me with the name/address of the original creditor, if different the current creditor. That is pretty much all it says regarding any of that type of stuff.

It lists the following info:

Creditor: Jefferson Capital Systems LLC

Original Creditor: AT&T Midwest

Original Account #: (removed for post)

Ref #: (removed for post)

Total Due: (removed for post)

The last time I had any type of account with AT&T was mid-late 2006. I don't recall them ever attempting to collect on it before. Honestly, I would not mind just paying the amount in question to make it go away if that is the path of least resistance. I am know very little about this stuff and don't really know if it is the best course of action to just pay it. Any advice on what the best way to proceed is would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
