I applied for an AMEX Delta Basic over 2 months ago. Was instantly approved for $1K. Two weeks later applied for the AMEX Green and was once again approved. Called AMEX soon after the approval and got my membership backdated on both cards to 2002. But when I called today, I was denied a CLI on the revolver. I PIF this card every week. I charge close to $3K every month and I pay $3K to the card. I use it heavely. I had a $200 balance this am when I called. Here's what I did:

1. Called the automated CLI number: denied

2. Talked to a CSR: denied

3. Called an AMEX underwriter: transferred to CSR

4. CSR transferred me to another CSR

5. CSR took a statement from me to be sent to an underwriter and a decision will be reviewed within 24 to 48 hours.

Right before the last CSR hung up with me, he said "GOOD THINGS WILL COME YOUR WAY" (odd). What am I doing wrong with AMEX?

I was hoping that wasn't the case. I had an EX score of 649 at the time of approval and last week EX was reporting me at 666. Maybe that's it. Maybe 666 means NO.

From what I have seen posted here, sub-700 will be hard to get a CLI. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try again though, and it doesn't mean I'm not going to try either. :D

My next plan after 24 - 48 hours is to do the Live Video Chat so that they can SEE that I'm a great customer. I'll even have AMEX propaganda hung on the wall behind me during the call.

After the initial 61+ day CLI request, you can only request a CLI every 6 months. I suggest that if you're denied you work on your reports for 6 months and try again.

Not on a denial

I've read posts here that you MAY be approved for a CLI within 6 months of a denial, but that ideally you should wait because often the next denial will cite that you have not waited 6 months. In other words, not waiting could start a never ending cycle that never leads to a CLI. At any rate, if denied, the goal should be to get the EX FICO higher for an approval.

@ Mendelssohn - Dude at AMEX said I could follow up with another call after an underwriter takes a look. But if that doesn't work, I won't visit the issue for another 13 months. AMEX CLIs don't determine my happiness. But you're right about the CRs. My CRs are the size of Harry Potter Novels and need plenty of TLC.

@ rslifkin - Glad you share my sense of humor. More to follow.

Same here. Next year my reports are going to shrink by about 60%. :D
