AMEX has changed their sign up bonus for the HHonors card. It's now 75k points for a $3k spend. That can get you 3 nights free in places like Orlando where they have several hotels for 20k/night, and they are not bad hotels. There's also locations that you can use points and money to get nights so you could stay at a hotel for 3 nights for 60k and the fourth night for for $50 and 8k points. If varies by hotel.

When I got mine in Feb the first 40k was after the first purchase and then you got the remaining 20k after a $3k spend.

Just thought I would mention this in case you're looking at taking advantage of the AMEX 2 for 1 app.

I think this card is better than the Citi HHonors card because of this change and the fact that the AF is $20 lower on the AMEX and the points per dollar is much better on the AMEX.

The upside to the Citi card is that the 2 weekend nights can be used for expensive rooms in bigger cities where the same room for one night could be 70-90k points. It depends on if you're looking for quantity or quality from your sign up bonus. Also the Citi has no foreign tx fees.

Neither card waives the AF the first year.

FH, you're becoming more of a points/mile wh*re than I am, and that's impressive! :good:

The sentence in red, in particular, couldn't be more true.

I'm draining my swamp of Hilton points and weekend certificates from these two (Citi and Amex Hilton) cards when we're in NYC in a couple of weeks.

As a point of reference, 75,000 Hilton points only gets you 0.9375 nights at the Doubletree Suites in Times Square.

I used a bunch more Hilton points on a fun-filled, action-packed dream weekend in Ohio recently (also at a Doubletree Suites). At that property, 75,000 points covered 2.5 nights.

Don't assume that you'll EVER be in a place that requires the fewest number of hotel points for a given redemption when evaluating these signup bonus opportunities. Be realistic. IME, you never actually get somewhere to use them for anywhere near the lowest redemption thresholds, and if you do, just paying cash for the room is probably smarter anyway unless you never travel anywhere more exotic than Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ha! I hear ya. It's quite the game just like credit repair. Now that my credit is well on the rebound I'm trying to learn more about maximizing it.

The light bulb just went off last night after looking at what our moving expenses will be from Chicago to LA. The moving van, hotels, gas and food will easily be $5k. Then I thought about which card I wanted to put it on and thats when the lightbulb lit up. I was like: the wife should open a Citi AA 100k bonus card because she wouldn't normally even consider running $10k through a card in 3 months but we'll easily be able to run the remaining $5k through after the moving expenses. We'll also run $3k through Amazon payments too.
