Here's the 50k application link for the US Airways Barclay card. I would jump on this now while you have the chance.

https://www.barclaycardus.com/apply/Landing.action?campaignId=1695&cellNumber=51

and here's the CIti AAdvantage 50k link:

http://www.aa.com/pubcontent/en_US/disclaimers/BP-PLATHV.jsp

This is a good time to rack up 90-100k in miles.

I wonder if they'd give me a third US Airways card. :P

Damn. I only got 30k when I signed up. Btw is it possible to sign up for the same card twice?

I have two of them, opened about 7.5 months apart. I was shocked when they approved me for the second, since in between #1 and #2 I was denied yet again for a Sallie Mae card. Upon denial for the SM the underwriter suggested that I wait at least a year before I should expect to be approved for a third Barclays card.

You may have gotten a better deal anyway.

This one is only 40k miles unless you can figure a way to manufacture a $10k balance transfer. AND it costs $89 up front (no 1st year AF waive).

Of course it's still a great deal! If I wasn't long new accounts & long Barclays I'd go for #2 myself. It's just a TU inq.

Maybe you could PC your first one to Sallie Mae then app for a new one. PCs are spotty with Barclays but it can't hurt to ask.

I'm going to try that when the first AF comes due, then open a new US Air or AA if the bonus is still on offer.

Really tempted to apply for the US Airways Barclay card.... My scores are still kinda sucky though. That being said, Barclays did just auto CLI me on my Apple Financing Visa. Maybe I should app and if they don't approve me ask about doing a PC on the apple visa to the US airways card?

Yeah, I hope none of us have 10k to transfer!!

There is another link for the US Air card at 30k with the AF waived if anyone is interested in that. I believe it's the one on their home web page.

From what I have read waiting at least 6 months is ideal, although not a sure thing. I have also read that someone got a second card in 3 months but I imagine their credit must have been top shelf.

So I ran by several other opportunities to score miles with your US Air card if your interested. I actually read about some of these a while back but forgot about it. The reason it sparked my memory was because I just got an email a few days ago for an offer of 10k in miles if I switched my electricity provider to Energy Plus. The offer on the US Air site is only 5k but may still be worth it if you didn't get the email. No additional fees that I could find in the small print.

https://www.usairways.com/en-US/dividendmiles/earnmiles/other.html

Here are the details from the Energy Plus site:

https://www.energypluscompany.com/usairways/choice/

If you live in CT, IL, MD, NJ, NY, PA or TX, you can earn miles just for paying your electric bill. Choose 'Energy Plus' as your electricity provider to earn miles while getting the same reliable service from your local utility company. Enroll today and you'll enjoy:

  • 5,000 bonus miles after 2 months
  • Unlimited year-round miles – 2 miles for every $1 you spend on the Energy Plus portion of your electric bill
  • No fees or long-term commitments
  • No interruption in service since your local utility company will continue to deliver your electricity, read your meter and handle any emergencies
  • The option to 'go green' and support 100% wind-generated power

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but which is the best deal? Citi or Barclay?

It's a good question. We'll the Citi link above waives the AF the first year and the Barclays card does not. The Citi is 10k more after the basic spending limit than the Barclays because to get the last 10k on the Barclays you have to do a $10k BT. I don't usually carry any balances, and if I do they are never that high so I consider the Barclays a 40k offer. The $89 AF for the Barclays is worth it for the miles in my opinion. You could cancel it after 11 months if you wanted. You will eventually be able to transfer (or it will be combined) the US Air Barclays miles to AA when they merge the two programs. That's what most of us are waiting on and why it's good to get both cards. You can also get the business Citi card if you want even more miles. You don't need a business but you could easily start and ebay store and claim a sole proprietorship if it makes you more comfortable. I think there is a higher offer than the citi site out there somewhere for the business card.

Some people have also apped for and been approved for a second Barclay card after about 6 months. If you get the US Air card and then they switch it to the AA card by Barclays you may be able to then app to get another one (the new Barclays AA card). It will depend on the rules the come up with but who knows right now. It's going to be a good year to score AA miles if you play it right. Now is the time to get the first set of cards, in my opinion. The 75k and 100k executive levels on the Citi card is a bit over my ability right now to meet the spending requirements.

I like the AAdvantage shopping site. I bought my wife an 1800$ necklace from David Yurman for Christmas and got 9000 miles because it was x5 miles offer. It's great around Christmas time.

Thanks Funkiehouse.

My wife and I are leaning toward the Barclay now. We arent looking to carry any balances either, but we would hate to miss out on a great deal. Barclay it is then.

We are just waiting on two more accounts to show $0 balance before we apply.

Hopefully we dont miss out, because we have a ton of Marriott points stashed away, and that would go nice with some bonus mile points.

Good plan. From what I have read some of the experts in the travel field think the Barclays card will be around until the 1st quarter of 2015 but that can easily change. That's why I think is good to grab it now so you can think grab one now and possibly another in Oct.

If you both got both of these cards now you would each have enough miles to fly first class to many international destinations when the programs merge.

If you go for AMEX at all this year you can also transfer Starwoods SPG points to AA miles. You get a 1:1 on the SPG with a 5k bonus for every 20k transferred.

http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/account/starpoints/transfer/airline/detail.html?PartnerCode=AMERICAN

If you go for a AMEX charge card that gets you bonus points I think you might be able to transfer those to SPG and then transfer to AA but I'm not 100% sure about that.
