I called Navy to join, my brother is active duty Air Force, and online was a no-go, as I don't know his last 4, and he's currently overseas.

rep: what is your eligibility?

me: my brother is in the Air Force, active duty

that was it, no other questions about my bro.

Applied for an auto refi, 8k 2 months @ 7.99 (good for me, my old rate was 12.99, and I'm chopping 8 payments off the term, payment up $20/month)

Rep says they'll have a decision tomorrow morning.

Clicked the pre-selected Cash Rewards link that showed up in my account.

Instant approval 20k... 20K?!?!?! what the... wow. that's just slightly under the total of all my revolving lines currently.

I'm still in shock.

Then I got an email saying my loan is approved. Am I dreaming?

Wow that's amazing. So do they ever go back and verify your brother and his military status? It almost sounds like anyone could do that.

They will. A lot of people have initially gotten in to later have all of their accounts locked/closed.

It looks like they pulled EQ + TU twice. That explains the rate. My EQ FICO is around 660.

Keep in mind that NFCU pulls credit for everything. They probably pulled TU for membership, EQ for the CC and both for the auto loan.

Simple fix. Freeze whatever you don't want them to use. They'll use what's available.

Nice! I'm not surprised you got approved for $20k with a 737 TU score... I got the same credit line with a 714.

Also, make sure you go for the NavChek (Checking Account overdraft line of credit) too! I have $14k currently, and it counts towards your total open lines on your credit report, which should help out your utilization % even more.

EDIT: Just saw you didn't mention opening a checking account with them... obviously the above doesn't apply unless you decide to.

+1 on NavChek

I opened the checking account today. TBH I'm concerned about my existing creditors freaking out when this hits my reports. It may be unfounded, but this is all new to me. The only credit I had prior to 2011 was bad credit. since the beginning of the year I went from 6k on 3 cards to 41k on 7 cards. just prior to NFCU, I had a recon CLI with Chase, and the analyst commented on all of my new credit.

Plus I don't really see a use for NavCheck, I don't run up too much util, I let all my cards report a small balance and PIF. I only revolve during 0% periods.

The other nice thing about NavChek is that you don't ever need to use it to keep it active. If $15K would be considered a high credit limit in your current portfolio, it may help you get approvals for higher limits in the future. If you do app, ask for the full $15K.

I was never asked for any docs. I'm not condoning people lie to get in, just saying that its not always the case.

Congrats OP!

I was trying to say that if you are not eligible and join, they will eventually find out. They are very good at sniffing out people that have joined and are not really elibible. If you really aren't eligible, it's not worth the risk.

since the beginning of the year I went from 6k on 3 cards to 41k on 7 cards

in less than 2 months my wife went from $3k to over $200k in lines.

did result in one new creditor freaking out and closing the newly opened card.

but all the rest are fine.
