So, I decided to try for a CLI on my NFCU Visa Platinum last week and was a little shy about asking for much so I just asked for a CLI from $13k to $15k. I clicked on the Increase My Credit Limit link inside my Visa account details screen, input my info in the the first screen, put how much I wanted and hit the submit button. It came back instant approval, so I was like GREAT! That's the first CLI I've received from them on the card I've had since 2008.

After I did that I was searching the interwebs about CLI from NFCU since I couldn't find specifics on the forum here. I found a master thread on the MyFico forums, and their theory is that you can click on the link, fill in the info and if it immediately comes back with an approval or a counteroffer, then it's a soft pull. If it takes you to a second screen where you have to submit it's most likely going to be a hard pull.

Their theory is that you should always ask for $25k at first and if you are already pre-approved for an amount between what you currently have and $25k it will counteroffer with that amount or give you the full $25k with a soft pull. If you ask for anything beyond $25k it will go for manual review, i.e. hard pull.

Others on that thread have been successful in their CLI's with a soft using this method. If you don't get an instant approval or counteroffer after the first screen, you can cancel your request and no hard is pulled.

Anyone tried this here?

*Side Note* - This is only for credit cards through NFCU, the Navcheck is apparently always a hard pull.

I asked for a CLI over the phone when I PCed my cashRewards to the Flagship Rewards and asked for a CLI from $10K to $15K. They countered higher at $17.5 K. :D

I requested a CLI on thr CLOC from $10K to $15K online later the same day and it was approved without a hard pull. YMMV

is there a normal time frame that I should wait before credit limit increase requests with navy? I don't want to ask too much as I am trying to grow my limit

why was my font so small???? :search:

Cause you're cool like that. :D

I've hit that luv button 3 times in one day because I was scared to ask for more...LOL!

So basically your max is what they counter you with. So if you ask for $25K and they counter with $20K, then you know not to ask for more. That makes it a one time deal.

But what I did was ask for incremental amounts until I got close to what I wanted. Hindsight is that had I just asked for the $25K I would have gotten what they were willing to give.

So put in $25K and see what they counter you with and that will be your new limit immediately. If you did a CLI today, yesterday, last week, so what. Do it again today and you'll be fine.

Oh and it's not always an SP either.

You have to be careful not to request a CLI too frequently, though. I remember reading a thread here a few months ago about someone that had multiple cards and had been requesting CLIs on all of them every few months. Navy closed down their cards and in the end, agreed to leave 1 open with a lower limit. IIRC they had $80K over 3 cards.

As I posted above, I asked for a modest CLI and they countered with a higher number. I did it over the phone, so I'm not sure if that made a difference.

Yep agreed, but I wasn't thinking OP would do that...LOL!!

But it's always best to clarify to make sure that one understands.

When I did my requests, they were about 8 months apart because I didn't want to screw up anything.

Hi Mendelssohn,

Yes, that was me! I got a call from NFCU Security Dept. one day to let me know ALL credit cards had been frozen and then ultimately closed, except for one. I was requesting CLI across all cards once every 30 days or so...

It eventually caught up to me, and now I'm getting the impression I have been flagged in their system. It's been 6 months since that happened and I just recently applied for their Flagship card and was DENIED with only 2 INQ's on TU and 30% UTI. - Their only reason was too many recently opened accounts. I've had 3 new accounts with Chase in the past year. YMMV....

So I'm still stuck with only one card with NFCU at 15k... I use to think that I could pull that Navy LUV button like a Slot machine... And.... well... someone, somewhere IS watching.

From personal experience, the MF thread explains it pretty well. Throughout the family, we've had quite a few online CLIs with Navy and almost never a hard pull.

The only time they wanted a hard pull was when I asked for a CLI to $25k the day after just getting one to $15k on the same card. I asked for the $15k on the phone as an afterthought and the CSR keep asking me if $15k was really enough as I could have $25k. I kept thinking about it the next day because it seemed the CSR was trying to tell me she knew I was already pre-approved for $25k so I called back for my additional $10k.

I got a secure message after a few minutes asking me to supply a copy of my LES and to unfreeze EQ. I couldn't be bothered to download my earnings statement and there was no way I wanted a hard pull. I just sent them a secure message and attached a work photo of myself. Got the CLI.

Never before that and never after that have there been problems.

Go for the CLI online. Keep EQ frozen. Keep it at $25k or less. Don't worry.
